New Criminal Syndicalism
Prosecutions Under Way
In Kansas
WASHINGTON, Aug. 31—Just
as the last criminal syndicalism
prisoners are being released in
California, new prosecutions are
starting, this time in Kansas.
Ten persons were arrested at a
meeting held In Kansas City to
mark the anniversary of the exe-
cution of Sacco and Vanzetti.
Eight of them were charged with
criminal syndicalism for member-
ship and activity in the Worker’s
Party,
All literature seized in connec-
tion with the arrests is admitted
to the mails and tolerated every-
where else in the United States,
according to the American Civil
Liberties Union, which will defend
the accused members.
Eicept for Pennsylvania, where
occasional charges of criminal
syndicalism have been brought,
this is the first prosecution under
one of these laws since 1924.
Other litigation arising from a
Sacco-Vanzetti memorial is threat-
eKed in St. Louis.
eje the Civil Liberties Union
plans suit against the police,
changing improper action in
breaking up.a meeting that had
been arranged under auspices of
the Workers’ Party. Twenty po-
licemen arrived before the meet-
" Ing assembled and locked the
doors of the hall where it was to
be held, it is charged. As partici-
pants arrived the police are said
to have ridden thru the crowd,
dispersing them, and throwing
tear bombs.
■ In Boston, also, where Or. Hor-
ace M. Kallen was charged with
blasphemy after speaking about
Sacco and Vanzetti, echoes of the
meeting probably will be heard
for some time to come. While
the charges have been withdrawn.
Dr. Kallen's attorneys are consid-
ering bringing suit for damages.
