elapsed from the time the alarm had
been given, but already the water had
surged over the bank in waves of such
volume and force, as. to sweep the
party from their feet before they
had traversed thirty yards.
The Colonel called for assistance on
some cavalry soldiers who had just
escaped from the United States mail
station near by, but they were too ter-
rorised to heed or to help.
Coonel Merriaih thien abandoned
the hope of saving hin fataily in the
carriage, and tried to ehter it in order
to swim out with them, but he was
swept down the ice-cold torrht like a
bubble. Being an export swimmer, he
succeeded in reaching the bank about
two hundred yards below, and ran back
to renew the effort ; when he received
the terrible tidings, tkat the moment
after ho was ewepi, down, the carriage,
with all its precious freight, had turned

from Fort Sill, a few weeks agv, were
captured on the 16th ultimo, on Pecan
creek, in Wise county, by a St out of
Federal troops, assisted by Drew
Smith and bis cow-hunters. IVhen
captured they still had in their posses-
sion some seventy-five heanl of govern-
ment mules, besides a number of mules
and horses belong to citizens of Wise
and other counties. The thieves were
unknown to all who saw them.
Kerr county Was visited on the 4th
iostaut by a terrible hail-storm, which
completely demolished the crops and
■dismantled the the trees.
Two mad dogs were shot recently in
San Antonio, aud now they have an
efficient law for muzzling dogs: but
tlie most rabid dog in that couhnupity
still remains unmuzzled, probably be-
cause his teeth are all drawn. The
dog’s name is Logan. He is, indeed,
“a eur of low degree.’’ Sick him.

That epauleted barbarian Captain
Eyre, of Boibay-Oneida ill-fame, has
presented a inemoria. alleging that ids
suspension fromcommand forsix months
was unjust. Unjust is Dot (be exact
word. His punishment is simply a
farce, viewed as a penalty for a bar-
barity unrivaled, in naval history. His
, name should have been struck frum the
roll of honorable seamanship, and made
a eynonym for oruelty the world over.
The: prayer of his petition is that the
sentence bo reconsidered. Let it be
granted; and then let an equitable pun"
ishinent be substituted. It must be true
that he is a brother of the Jamaica
butcher. : _
TuE verdict of the jury of not guilty
in the McFarland case, can only be ap-
proved of on the principle that fols
are not responsible for their acts. Mdhe
man was no more insane than any other
weak-headed, jealous, drunken, no-ac-
count fellow might be,.
