The trim young Jorgensen
swarmed tough Bobby Bell of

He gave a crowd of 1,831 that
braved a cold rain a grand

in defensive tactics.
Weighing 129 to Bell’s 127, Jor-

There were no knockdowns but

guess he ain’t here, huh?" V
“That’s possible,” Burkhauser
admitted. "It was only a guess
that he’d try to go north with
the first trail herd.”
“Anyway, rd look 'em over
careful, was I you,” Ricker said.
The man's manner of speaking,
the studied casualness, drew
Burkhauser’s attention like a
magnet. He studied Ricker, but
the man was drinking, closing
him out; he had said all he In-
tended to say, which, to Burk-
hauser, was more than enough.
There were no men in the room
who were unaware of Finley
Burkhauser's identity; they had
either heard it from Smoke or
Pokey, or they noticed his badge,
which he made no effort to con-
ceal. •
Burkhauser kept searching for
an opening, but there were few
chancel since the men liked to
pack three deep at the counter,
either to get another drink or
another look at Elizabeth Rettig.
Moving about, Burkhauser
watched and listened amd found
himself growing confused; there
were too many men here who fit
the wanted man's description.
Finally he settled on one man
although his reason for doing so
was more instinctive than logi-
cal This man stood near the
door end of the bar, not talking,
not laughing, not even interested
in Elizabeth Rettig, which set
him off right away in Burk-
hauser's mind. A closer examin-
ation showed that this man had
not been drinking much, either.
Sure, he had a cup of whiskey
in front of him and he raised it
to his Ups a k>( but he never
drank much.
Siding up to him, the counter

“Havin’ a good time?"
”1 can't complain,” the man
said. His voice was deep, sandy,
and Burkhauser noticed that he
wore his gun on the left hip, butt
forward. He tried to figure out
whether or not this was set up
for a right handed cross drew,
then decided not: the gun was
back too far; a man would have
to use a left hand, palm out
draw.
The man standing next down
the counter caught Burkhauser’s

well-conditioned team didn’t
need too much substituting.
Opinion of those who have fol-
lowed Air Force is that Texas
Christian never before this season
met a team so well-conditioned.
It is a natural thing at the aca-
demy. The regimen requires it.
That Air Force has two teams
of almost equal strength as has
TCU is shown in the fact that the
second team produced more
touchdowns through’the first five
games with the result that two
players were moved up to the
No. 1 unit—quarterback Rich
Mayo and fullback Steve Galios—
to better equalize the situation.
When it gets down to third
teams Texas Christian may have
more strength but the way those
Air Force boys play and the
shape they're in to play it there’s
little likelihood of reaching that
far.

The man smiled, and it was
pleasant. "Ah speak soft, and *
ah draw left handed. But ah
wouldn’t try to snap them on
mah wrists if I was you."
Suddenly Burkhauser knew
that he was talking to the wrong

out his hand. "You take care at

Burkhauser was after, one man,
a dangerous man well aware that
the law was after him.
"Suppose he’s out there now,
Finley?” she asked.
He shrugged. "Then any job’ll
be easier than I thought” He put
his arm around Elisabeth end

Twelve Texans stood against

They came trooping, whooping in,
