NEW YORK t—The steel and
auto industries share the some-
times embarrassing honor of be-
ing the most closely watched
of all, nd just now the pulse-
taking and solemn findings are
being stepped up from weekly
to almost daily.
Steel companies this week and
next will be deciding whether
to cut or maintain dividends in
the face of lower output and
earnings. Some are trimming
prices on certain products or in
certain areas. New orders are
stubbornly refusing to flow at
hoped-for rates. Ahead are ne-
gotiations, with the union on the
question of higher wages, or
shorter work weeks, or longer
' -vacations.-

any ship headed to Cuba with a lead of offensive (military)
weapon* Now we have to do it. In the language of the
popular expression we must fish or cut ban.
------re ihv pi'haps facing some American
naval officer in the near future. His job it will be to give
-the order to fire when a ship fails to-respond to his orders
to halt He will know that on his order rides the distinct
possibility that this naticn will be thrown into a hot war
But make it he must, because there can be no retreat
now. All the Western world long has known that the only
language the Russians understand is the language of
strength, of force. They may not understand why we car
get sc excited about 18 men trying to bat and throw a little
white ball but ’hey understand what we mean when wr
say we are going to shoot to make sure our orders are
carried out.
America could be on the brink of mobilization and
after that war. Yet the man on the street (whoeevr he is)
and the citizens who send telegrams to Washington (whoever
they are I say to the President a hearty "Well done."
In short, America is united again against an enemy, jus'
as we always have been when the chips are down.

21-year husband: "Why does
she still talk so much? What is
there left for her to say?”
By HAL BOYLE
NEW YORK F — All women
ire puzzling, but some women
are more puzzling than others.
These are called wives.
A man generally feels he
knows a girl until he marries
her. It is then she begins to
grow mysterious, confusing and
unpredictable.
Just what is this elusive quali-
ty about wives that sometimes
enchants, sometimes annoys,
and always befuddles their hus-
bands?
To be specific, I asked 32
husbands to give a one-sentence
reply to this question: “What
is the thing you find hardest
to understand about your wife?”
Well, the husbands had been
in bondage from periods varying
from four months to 39 years,
and their answers showed a
wide, range.

many steelmen had expected.
The prolonged slackness in
sales volume plus increased op-

raise prices, have pared earn-
ings sharply below the first
quarter levels.

note and cut their dividend rates
last summer. Others maintain-

earnings didn’t cover the pay-

their earnings didn't cover the

directors of most steel compan-

if this policy shoo'd be continu-

counters rumors sweep the stock
market nadlosglcjrices of steel
stocks.
Stainless steel prices have
been cut in recent days by a
number of firms seeking . to
maintain their share of a mar-
‘ket where supplies have outrun
demand. Steel prices across the
board have been pared on the
West Coast to bring them near

where traditionally they have
been lower.
Foreign steel becomes increas-
ingly competitive, both because
overseas production capacity has
been mushrooming and lately be
nause markets in some other in-
dustrial lands have been shrink-

to be shinned here—and domes-
tic producers, especially on the
West Coast, are comvlaining in-
creasingly of the inroads.

Gallantry is by no means dead
