Some people claim that they can match husbands and
their wives in any large group. It is true that many couples
seem to resemble each other the longer they live together
Children often resemble their parents both in looks
and actions. Although many times parents may hesitate to
acknowledge it, children's actions, moods, speech and
attitudes are often merely reflections of our own. We need
not look into a mirror to observe our likeness Watch the
children. They are miniature replicas of us.
Among humans this tendency to imitate may not always
be for the good. But the Heavenly Father wants His children
to be like Him. He has given us an example to follow. Our lives
should reflect the actions, talk and attitudes of Jesus Christ.
The more time we spend worshipping Him, the better replicas
of Him we become. That is a good reason for worshipping
together this week.

A group of the brethren
from Czechoslovakia came to
Texas and settled in a small
community know as Veseli,
now known as Wesley, in
Washington County in 1841.
Their only religious activity in
these days was to meet
periodically in the homes for
brief and informal devo-
tionals.
In about 1860 the Rev.
Josef Opocensky came from
Europe to settle in industry.
After joining the Confed-
eracy, moving his family to
Mexico and then back to
Wesley the Wesley Church
was officially oranized Sept-
tember 25, 1864. Th*need for
a church building became
evident and in 1866, tMfe
congregation erected a build-
ing. This became the first
church building of the Czech
Brethren faith to be built in
North America.

In 1888 the Rev. B. E.
Laciak became pastor. He was
an artist and painter, and in-
the fall of 1889, during his
spare time from pastoral
duties, he painted and
decorated the interior of the
Church. Just what he intended
to portray with his paintings is
not certain, but the stories
handed down suggest the
following thoughts: A brick
wall was painted around the
entire interior wall of the
Church as high up as the top
of the windows, and suggests
a bulwark of strength as the
wall of Jerusalem which
enclosed and protected the
spirit of Christianity. The
bricks are gray, outlined in
black. White pillars and their
shadows were painted at
intervals on the brick walls,
reminiscent of the pillars in
Solomon’s Temple. Above
each pillar is painted the star
of David. The center of the
ceiling has some geometrical
designs, and around the edge
of the ceiling is painted a
continuous chain design de-
noting the unbroken chain of
brotherhood. Behind the
pulpit was painted a golden
chalice and the words “God
With Us!’ The Rev. Laciak is
said to have remarked that
this would be a remembrance
to him, and indeed it has
been. To this day it is both
strange and inspiring to those
who see it. Rev. Laciak was
accidentally killed in a hunting
accident in September of 1891
and is buried in the church
cemetery.
The Church has an unusual
and varied history relative to
its pastors and worship
services. The last worship
service held in the old Church
was on December 15, 1963.
