last year. What will the new tax
form mean to someone like me ?
A.—Unless your situation has
changed from what it was last
year, you will probably need only
the one-page Form 1040. Over
30 million taxpayers will be able
to file just this single page form
and this total includes most of the
19 million like yourself who filed I
the card form last year.
Q—My son is working his way
through college. Will the amount
he earns affect our exemption for
him?
A.-—The amount of his earnings
will not affect the dependency
exemption if he is under 19 at
year end or a full-time student
during five months of the year.
However, the other dependency
tests must continue to be met.
Your son’s earnings used for his
support should be included in total
support in determining whether
you provided over half his support.
Q.—Can you take a deduction
for custom duties paid on gifts
bought in Europe?
A.—No, custom duties are not
deductible.
Q.—Is there any Social Security ■
tax on household help when you
pay $50 a quarter but divide it
between two people ?
A.—No, you are liable for the
tax only when you pay one person
$50 or more cash wages in a cal-
endar quarter.

Our members are preparing for
the Christmas holiday. It is very
difficult for your staff officers to
personally extend Holiday Greet-
ings and it is difficult to send
each member a personal greeting
card. Each of us have placed our
personal Season’s Greetings in The
Dallas Craftsman.
May you have

We do enjoy reading the many
beautiful cards we are receiving
from our friends among the mem-
bership. One in particular I did
enjoy . . . about Jesus, which this
is all about.
“He was bom and grew up in
an obscure village, the child of
ordinary people. He worked as a
carpenter and an itinerant preach-
er. He never wrote a book, never
held an office, never had a family,
nor owned a house. When He
was only 33 His enemies had Him
nailed to a cross—his executioners
gambled for His clothing. He was
laid in a borrowed grave. After
nineteen centuries. He is the cen-
tral figure of the human race.
All the kings that ever reigned,
all the armies that ever marched
have not affected the life of man
as much as that ONE SOLITARY
LIFE.’’ May the Peace and Joy
of Christmas abide with you and
yours always.
Hi Brothers:
Just a line from your B.R. to
inform you that Mr. William H.
Berry, Painting Contractor of
Winnsboro, Texas, has been placed
on the unfair list, as he is using
open shop painters on a school
between Como, Texas, and Pink-
ington, Texas. Some of our broth-
ers have worked for Mr. Berry
in the past. I have also told the
P.D.C. of A. of this action.
I want to remind you also of
Sec. 146 of the Constitution, which
states that quarterly working cards
will be paid by the 20th of each
quarter or you are subject to
charges filed against you, . also
check Sec. 12-A of the By-Laws,
which states you are subject to
charges if you are working with
a member who does not have
proper identification. This means
you can come by the office and
pick up a work permit good until

। Attendance at last Monday’s
meeting reached a low record. We
know that the coming holidays and
end-of-year matters could be one
of the reasons for the lack of
attendance at our meetings. There
are many things that lay members
should perform such as sick com-
mittees, trial committees, etc. We
urge more of our members to help
your officers carry on the duties
of the union.
We received word last Saturday
morning of the death of Finley
Allen, the First General Vice
President of the Brotherhood. His
services were held in Washington
last Monday. Brothers Al Spring,
of our local and W. C. Cleveland
of Local Union 1276, attended the
services, along with many other
members from Texas.
Bro. Warren Cain called me last
week and stated that he had
just received word of his moth-
er’s death in Tyler, Texas. We
have not talked to him since he
returned from the services and do
not have any information of the
cause of her death. Our heart-
felt sympathy goes out to Bro.
Cain in this sad hour.
Funeral services are being held
today (Tuesday) for E. W. Speer,
prominent Masonic leader for
many years. He was business
agent for Local 198 for several
years before being elected secre-
tary of Tannehill Masonic Lodge,
a position he held for 46 years.
The Labor Temple will be closed
Friday and Saturday after Christ-
mas. Mr. Dilley, the manager of
the Labor Temple in sending out
the announcement of the closing
stated, that it would not hurt dues
collection as no one would have
any money anyway after Christ-
mas. The building will NOT be
closed Friday and Saturday after
New Years.
See you next Monday night
we hope.
