Jackets give Ball High 9-8 jolt - Michael
Gultz drove in four runs and joined teammates
Rudy Amador and winning
pitcher Dewayne Burgess
with home runs as Alvin jolt-
ed Galveston Ball, 9-8 in
the the bottom of the seventh off Tors’ reliever
Joel Williams to score Thomas Duncan all the
way from first base with the winning run.
The game-winning hit capped an evening
where Alvin (10-11-1,4-8 in district) overcame
deficits of 4-0 and 7-6 after almost overcoming
an 8-0 barrier against Clear Creek last week.
Alvin matched the most home runs for a
game during 1998 with its other three HR per-
formance coming against Dulles here in March.
Alvin has now tied its all-time season high for
long balls at 14 as well.

However, Gultz and Amador each struck for
two-run blasts in the second and third frames,
respectively, while Jason Miglicco raced all the
way home from second base on a wild pitch in
the fourth to give Alvin its first lead.
Gultz’s double plated Amador in the fifth for
a 6-4 AHS advantage, before the Tors rallied
for a three-spot in the sixth which inclded sac-
rifice flies by Tucker and Paul Coonrod.
Burgess’ cannon blast to left with Griffin Kibbe
aboard during the frame’s bottom half then
regained the upper hand for Alvin at 8-7 before
Luis Tovar’s RBI double in the top of the sev-
enth evened the issue again.

Jackson qualifies for state gymnastics
invite - AHS senior gymnast Fawn Jackson
advanced to the state competition next week '
with a third-place all-around showing at the
regional meet, April 15-16 in Bryan. However,
Alvin missed qualifying for state as a team by
1/8 of a point after making the necessary marks
last year.
Jackson also placed third on the balance .
beam along with seventh places on the vault,
uneven bars and floor exercise events. The state
meet is slated for April 30-May 2 in Bryan.
Senior Stephanie Hauser also turned in per-
sonal highs on both the beam and floor events,
while Desi Franklin had a 9.35 on vault.
Tony Segovia just missed by three places of
advancing to state as the AHS lone boys’ gym-
nast, finishing 13th on rings.
Alvin Community College watched its
advantage for the final playoff berth in the
Region XIV Baseball Conference slip to just
half a game after dropping a wild 13-9 affair
with Galveston College at Phillips Field,
Wednesday afternoon.
The Whitecaps clubbed six home runs in col-
lecting their 14th straight victory with Brandon
Backe accounting for the half that total with
three round-trippers, which included a pair of
two-run shots. David Domer also belted two
home runs for Galveston.
The Dolphins (20-24, 12-19) suffered their
fifth straight conference defeat despite home
runs by Rondy Spardella, Rudy Rivera and
Vincent Espinoza with the latter two blows
coming back-to-back in the sixth inning.
With fifth-place Wharton County College
idle this week, ACC needs to earn at least a
split with Galveston in the teams’ Saturday
twinbill here at noon to still hold the upper
hand in the standings. Alvin closes the regular
season with three games at Wharton County
next week.
Galveston (who along with Blinn College,
trails front-runner San Jacinto North by one
game) jumped to a 4-0 with Backe socking a
two-run shot off starter Gilbert Landestoy in
the first, while Aaron Melebeck added a solo
blast during the second.
