Students of the fourth grade
chose fiction books; fifth graders
read non-fiction. After reading the
book, the students wrote letters to
the authors.
“Most authors have been most
gracious and have answered the
students’ letters,” Librarian Ann
Tibbett said. “The exact number of
letters written to students by
authors is not known but there is a
large stack of them and the school
has started two scrapbooks for
displaying the letters.” She feels
that one day the letters from
authors could be a collector’s item
and valuable.

Tibbett, Librarian, doubles as the
Witch of the Day as she helped
conduct the costume parade and
balloon release. Ms. Tibbett said the
students, who dressed as their
favorite character in the book they
read, have received many answers
to letters addressed to authors of
the books, and she expects that
some day the letters may prove
valuable.

books, and it was stipulated that no
money must be spent on the
costume, the costume had to be
“student designed” from “found”
material at home and no parent
help.
Prizes were ribbons specially
designed using the Garfield the Cat
character. Several of the teachers
also dressed in costume. Judges
were Roy Liesmann, Toni Hensley,
Nelda Vogt. They judged on ori-
ginality of costumes as well as
material used. Fourth grade
winners were
Melanie Slavens, first; Greg Bien,
second; Zane Bone, third; Valerie
