Thanksgiving
“It was a beginning,” President Reagan said, and lovers of
freedom around the globe can take heart.
We are thankful for President Reagan and his efforts to negotiate
an agenda which conceivably could lead to a lasting peace. We are
grateful to our European Allies who voiced hope and praise for our
President at the conclusion of a “summit” meeting with the Soviet
leader at Geneva.
We are grateful, mostly, the President did not “give the store
away,” but held by his convictions and the convictions of most
Americans that you must negotiate with the Russians from a position
of a strong and durable defense establishment. We are further
grateful that it was Ronald Reagan, and not someone else, who
represented this Republic at Geneva.
Perhaps something good will come from the “summit,” that future
meetings between the leaders of the two most powerful countries on
earth will produce some progress toward a lasting peace.,
On this Thanksgiving Day we Americans have a lot to be thankful
for, and a lot of things to do if we are to achieve the kind of living
standards all people can enjoy. We happen to believe progress is be-
ing made in that direction.
When he spoke to the nation two nights before his departure for
Geneva, President Reagan called on Americans to pray for a suc-
cessful meeting. The national press, for the most part, ignored this
plea in its account of his address. That may have been the most im-
portant favor he has ever asked of his fellow citizens. And, judging
by news accounts from the summit, it is evident that many
Americans answered his plea by calling on the Almighty for wisdom
and common sense for our President.
It’s never too soon to turn to God for guidance and direction. But
some day it could be too late.
For all our readers, the staff of The Boerne Star wishes a happy
and prayerful Thanksgiving.
