Tubba Young, Cleburne High re-
serve center of last fall, is not
worrying about the eight-semester
rule. He has several more years
anyway and it won't affect him in
the leas
Young is slated to play tackle
next season. He's down to 169
pounds, but expects to reach 175
by the opening of the 1932 sea-
son. '
Young started out as a center
but with Sandy Hagler and Earl
Whits, returning he won't see much
aertro -at the pivot -pont- nettfall.

But while high school and
college baseball is on the de-
cline the amateurs and semi-
pros are coming along stronger
than ever. The State is filled
with leagues that produce boys
who make good in professional
ball.
We are not like many gloom
chasers who see the decline of
baseball in the majors'a nd min-
or leagues. We believe more
players are being produced each
| season than ever before.

What was the origin of the
term "Texas Leaguer”? asks a
, fin. It’s a short story.
A fellow named Pickering,
fresh from the Texas League,
played with Cleveland and in
his first game hit safely four
i limes, each time being a liner
that bumped and fell out of
reach of the infielders. So they
called 'em Texas Leaguers, and
the title has stuck.

We'd like to see more high
schools play baseball, but ap-
parently the grand old game is
dying a natural death in the in-
stitutions of learning. It just will
- not pay its way and moreover
it's too mucli chance lor profes-
' sionalism. -
’ The boys just will slip away and
play bail for money if not for
cash they run up a hotel bill
in a town where they never spend
even ono night. Most of th? mon-
ey for the hote. . expenses finds
Hw way to thelr pockets for use
in other lines.

The 1932 Cleburne basket ball
campaign is over.
It closed Tuesday night with
practice games. An interesting
scholastic league tilt, scheduled
between Lillian and Rock Tank
was forfeited to the former.
It proved by far the most suc-
cessful season Cleburne has had
with nineteen teams comprising
four leagues taking part.
Trophies of the season will be
awarded this week. Joshua won
the Johnson County Girls League
title, Dairyland took the cham-
pionship of the upper bracket of
the Johnson County Boys League.

With a field of 50 lined up
through Tuesday -afternoon indi-
cations are that the list will ap-
proach 60 before the closing time
on entries which will be this
evening.
Only six have qualified to date
but a flock of them will be on
the course this afternoon to turn
in scores. They have until Sunday
to post their totals.
Dr. J. M. Stallcup is leading the
early qualifiers with a 92. Gar-
jinx Tucker, ugly sport scribe
on the Waeo papers, says Smith
of Abilene is a better center
than Hagler.
We don't know about that. We
looked over Smith in the Stale
championship battle last fall
and he lacked a lot in that game
of being up to Hagler's stand-
ard.
• He's about as big as Hagler,
but does not tackie as ferocious-
ly or as accurately as Hagler.
We've seen Jack Sisco, too.
Jack’s the boy Tucker will al-
ways rave about. Sisco may be
some better than Hagler, but
that is Just from an all-round
standpoint. From the defensive
viewpoint we do not think the
Waco warrior of 1924 is the I
1~ equal of Hagler.
