THIS SHERIFF’S JOB IS A CURIOUS ONE,
LIKE THE HOUSEWIFE’S JOB, IT’S NEVER DONE.
CALLS COME BY NIGHT, AND THEY COME BY DAY,
THEY MAY BE NEAR OR MILES AWAY.
“HURRY UP!” SAYS THE CALLER, “YOU’RE BADLY NEEDED HERE,
MY HUSBAND HAS A GUN AND HE’S FULL OF BEER.”
WE JUMP IN OUR CAR AND HIT THE ROAD,
AND DRIVE LIKE A STEAMLINER WITH A HEAVY MAIL LOAD.
OUR ONLY HOPE AND ALL WE CAN FIGURE,
IS TO BE ON HAND BEFORE HE PULLS THE TRIGGER.
WE ARRIVE AND AMID ALL THE CONFUSION,
WE LEARN THE AFFAIR WAS A SIMPLE DELUSION.
PAW, WITH HIS GUN, WAS JUST OUT HUNTING,
AND MAW HAD GONE SHOPPING FOR SOME BUNTING.
NEXT DAY WE’RE HUNTING A STRAYED MOTTLE-FACED COW,
THAT NIGHT WE REFEREE A NICE FAMILY ROW.
AN ENDLESS VARIETY OF THE OLD AND THE NEW,
IT MAY BE A PROWLER, A BURGLER, A DRUNK,
HE MAY STEAL YOUR BILLFOLD, YOUR WATCH, OR YOUR TRUNK.
WE SET OUT TO CATCH HIM, AND WE DO OUR BEST,
WE CATCH A PERCENTAGE AND WE LOSE THE REST.
WE CAN’T GET THEM ALL, FOR SOME LEAVE NO CLUE,
THEY DON’T LEAVE THEIR CARDS, LIKE THE CANDIDATES DO.
SOMETIMES THEY PLEAD GUILTY AND THE JUDGE WILL SCOLD,
THEN THEY WILL WANT TO BE PUT ON PAROLE.
THEY BLAME INFLATION, THE NEW DEAL, THE TARIFF,
BUT MOST OF THE BLAME IS PUT ON THE SHERIFF.
SO, IT’S QUITE A GAME, IF YOU STAY RIGHT IN,
YOU’LL GET A PAT ON THE BACK OR A SOCK IN THE CHIN.
BUT I LIKE IT, AND I’M SHEDDING NO TEARS,
AND I’D LIKE TO BE YOUR SHERIFF FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS.

From the book “Battle With
Temptation”, K. Morgan Edwards
tells about Bobby Leach, the
Englishman who astonished the
world by going over Niagra Falls in
a barrel without suffering serious
injury.
A few years later he slipped on an
apple peel and was taken to the
hospital with a badly broken leg. Dr.
Stewart Anderson, in a commentary
on the incident said, “Some great
temptations, which roar around us
like Niagra, may leave us
unharmed. But a little, insignificant
incident may cause our downfall
simply because we are not looking
for it.”
For many people, there is a term
used called “polite theft.” This is a
means of getting what they think
should be theirs. They feel they
deserve out of life more than they
are getting.
In this manner, they convince
themselves that it is all right to pad,
or falsify, income tax deductions,
expense accounts and even adjust
cash sales tickets “to make a little
extra spending money.”
Some will cite the fact that 75
percent of all hotel and motel guests
donor without dependents covers
himself, parents, siblings under age
18 and other tax dependents.”
Donors should be between the,
ages of 17 and 72 (17-year-olds need
written parental consent), weigh at
least 110 pounds and be in good
general health. For more

at 249-2527, at FBC.

need to make a few exceptions in
His eighth commandment which
says, “You shall not steal?” It is
certainly not plausible that the Holy
Spirit will agree. It simply will not
work! Our knowledge and learning
of God’s Word should be cause
enough to resist such temptation.
Stealing never has been, and
never will be, a part of God's
direction for each of us. No matter
how petty the theft!
Ephesians 4:28 instructs us, “Let
him that stole steal no longer; but
rather working with his hands the)
things which is good.”
The small things that we are
tempted to “Slyly” borrow without
permission then “forget” to return
will never go unseen. As it has been
said, “to have less with God’s
approval is much better than having
more without it.”
