that parents call their physician if
they believe their children may have
measles.
“Most parents nowadays have
never seen a case of measles,”
McDonald said, adding that many
doctors have never seen a case. “I'd
suggest calling your doctor and con-
ferring with him before bringing a
child in, since it’s very contagious.”

Collin County commissioners
approved the county Open Space
Board’s plan to seek private funding
for a $3 million outdoor education
camp.
Although the county won’t have to
pick up the tab during the three to
five years the camp is under de-
velopment and operation, it will be
responsible for contracting with the
potential camp operator for leasing
of the camp site.
“The site is on Corps of Engineer
land on Lake Lavon, which is cur-
rently raw, undeveloped land,” Ei-
leen Tollett, chairwoman of the Out-
door Education Camp Committee,
told commissioners Monday.
Commissioners said they felt jus-
tified in giving the board the go-
ahead because in 1988 the county
funded a study to determine the
location of the camp.
The study, which cost $25,000
and was handled by the Austin-based
Inside/Outside company, studied
several sites before selecting the
Lake Lavon site.
The overnighecamp, which will be
located north of U.S. Highway 380
and Caddo Park in Lake Lavon, will
be open year-round and serve 150
residents.
Open Space Program Manager
Bill Fraser said the idea for the out-
door camp had long been a goal of
the Open Space Committee even be-
fore it officially became the Open
Space Board.
He said the idea for the camp goes
back to the 1983 county bond prog-
ram in which the Open Space Plan
discussed the need to preserve the
environment.

Despite an outbreak of measles in
nearby Dallas County, only one case
has been confirmed in Collin County.
However, outbreaks across the na-
tion have prompted a change in
measles immunization policy.
After decades of advocating a
single-vaccination strategy for the
prevention of measles, experts are
now recommending two vaccina-
tions.
“After 30 years, the powers that
be say that’s not going to do it,” Dr.
Russell McDonald, an area pediatri-
cian, said of the single-vaccination
method.
In the past, the American
Academy of Pediatrics,- recom-
mended a single immunization for
children at age 15 months and then
only again during an outbreak, ex-
plained Dr. Terrence F. Henry, a
Plano family practitioner. Henry said
the academy’s new stance calls for
immunizations at 15 months and
again at about age 12.
Henry said the position of the
Centers for Disease Control in
Atlanta varies slightly — an im-
munization at 15 months and again
during the 4-6 age group.
While children generally are vac-
cinated against measles at 15
months, Dr. Charles Haley, chief
epidemiologist for the Dallas County
Health Department, said the initial
immunization age has been lowered
to 6 months because the disease is
showing up in children at a much
younger age.
Dallas County has confirmed 42
cases of measles and officials there
are investigating 43 additional cases.
Measles have been reported in chil-
dren as young as 8 months. At pre-
sent, no deaths have been attributed
to the disease.
Collin County has documented
only one case this year and it is in an
adult, according to a nurse at the
Collin County Health Department
who asked not to be identified.
“We have no active outbreak in
Collin County at this point,” the
nurse confirmed.
Symptoms of measles include a
high fever (101 degrees to 104 de-
grees), inflamed eyes, runny nose,
cough and red rash.
“It usually lasts 10 days,” McDo-
nald said. “Two to four days after
you start getting sick, you’ll get a
rash. And you’ll run a fever about a
week.”
While the very young are most
susceptible to the disease, McDo-
nald said anyone who has not been
vaccinated against measles is at high
risk.
“Measles are very infectious. You
can just be in a room with someone
with the disease and get it,” he said.
