No doubt about it, plastic is a
problem for our society. It has en-
couraged us to take the “use it and
lose it” point of view. Unfortunately,
this stuff is made to be strong and
last. You can be sure it will last for
hundreds of years in the landfills.

Ever get one of those “back in the
olden days” questions from your
kids? Well, I got a "doosie" recently.
My son asked what we used back in
the olden days instead of plastic.
Trying hard to respect his ques-
tion and not burst out laughing, I
informed my son I wasn’t that old,
and I really didn’t know how we got
along without plastic.
- History tells us plastic has been
around since 1868. During World
War II, plastic was used for electro-
nic and communication equipment
because it could withstand heat and
humidity. After that, nothing was
ever the same.
By 1986, 45 billion pounds of plas-
tic were sold. Today in the U.S.,
plastic outsells the “back in the olden
days” material, steel. The plastic in-
dustry tells us they expect the use of
plastics to rise 50 percent in the
1990s.
There is no doubt about it; we use
plastic for everything. And why not?
It’s light weight, durable and cheap.
Plastic touches our life from the
morning when we brush our teeth,
to the evening when we switch off
the lights.
But, however much admired,
plastic causes more questions and

First, let’s look at what plastic is
made of. It starts with a mixture
derived from oil or natural gas called
resin. Chemical companies sell this
to plastic manufacturers, who melt it
and add chemicals to it. After heating
it at high temperatures, they pour it
into a mold, let it cool, and presto —
