Q: Do you have data on the
cost of operating a car?
A: Owning and operating a new
car costs $4,954 per year in 1990, up
about 8 percent from 1989, accord-
ing to the American Automobile
Association. However, these fi-
gures were published before the
climb in gasoline prices began in Au-
gust 1990. On a mileage basis, the
cost to motorists is 33 cents per mile
this year, up 2.4 cents over the prior
year. This data is based on a compo-
site national average for operating
three domestically built passenger
cars: a subcompact Ford Escort, a
mid-sized Ford Taurus L and a full-
sized Chevrolet Caprice. Total in-
surance costs average $657 this
year.
Q: How many credit cards
does the average person have?
How much are they used?
A: According to the Nilson Re-
port, a credit card research com-
of residual bleach from the denim
fabric during the manufacturing pro-
cess. The residual bleach turns the
’fabric yellow when exposed to warm
water, detergent, heat from the
dryer, or sometimes even light.
There is no way to remove the
permanent damage caused by the
bleach. Because the yellowing of
stone-washed fabric is a manufactur-
ing defect, consumers should return
the stone-washed garment to the
store or catalog company for a full
refund. The brand name, RN num-
ber on the care label, and statement
of the problem should be sent to the
-Federal Trade Commission En-
forcement Division, Washington,
D.C. 20580.
Q: How long should you keep
makeup? I’m concerned with
bacterial growth, especially in
eye makeup.
A: The way a cosmetic is used can
help keep the product bacteria-free.
Even preservatives lose effective-
ness over time. Mascara should be
discarded after six months. Discard
oil-based make-up, cream or liquid,
after six months, and lipstick and
pressed powders after eight to 12
months. Any product that has
changed appearance or odor should
be discarded. To keep your eye
makeup safe, always wash your
hands before applying; never add
water, saliva or other substances.
Keep containers and applicators
clean. Never use another person’s
makeup or let anyone use yours.
