Athletes and the quality of their
athletic endeavors.
The Athletic Booster Club is like
any other voluntary organization in
that its success or failure depends
solely on the efforts of its members.
Unfortunately, the trend is that
fewer people get involved each
year. This increasing lack of
participation brought the Booster
Club near dissolution this year.
Fortunately, a few involved
parents have agreed to take on the
demanding jobs of being Booster
Club officers. The 1990-1991 Officers
are:
Richard Baggs — President.
Steve Smith — Vice-President.
Shirley Barnett — Secretary.
Laura Hodges and Susan Taylor
— Co-Treasurers.
Denia Lemm — Historian.
These people are eager to make
the 1990-1991 year the best ever. I
thank them for having the courage
to accept these positions amid such
apathetic times. I also envy the joy,
laughter and personal rewards they
will share. These people are
working for the benefit of ALL
athletes and they certainly deserve
the active involvement and support
of all parents.

Sandra Radtke and everyone at
BMS for this and for all the
opportunities given to us to
participate in the partnership of
educating our children.
This year the partnership has
extended into the community.
Thanks must go to Ted Lechner and
HEB for including BMS in their
Adopt-a-School program which
resulted in employee volunteers, as
well as, contributions in dollars and
merchandise. We would also like to
thank the Boerne businesses that
supported MOPS and BMS.
Especially successful was our first
ever athletic programs spearheaded $
by Cindy Crocker and supported by
advertising exclusively from
Boerne.
Lastly, but most importantly,
thanks to the many, many parents
who chose to meet the challenge of
becoming an active participant in
their children’s lives. Without all of
you, MOPS would not exist. And
without you we would not have been
able to complete the structure of

makes Boerne Middle School the
best.

An open letter to the City of
Boerne:
I have just returned from a tour
of the Wilderness trail in the City
Park. As vice-president of the
Boerne Softball Club, Inc. and as a
Grandfather of a Little League ball
player, I am concerned about a
statement in a local paper on May
16, by Ann Schnaph, Bexar County
Audubon Society. Her statement is
that the Boerne City Park should be
protected from athletic fields and
paved parking lots.
There are 530 area boys and girls
; for the 1990 season signed up in
BYAA. There are 209 men softball
‘ players in the Boerne Softball Club
Inc. There were 380 boys and girls
signed up for the Soccer League last
, year.
The Wilderness Trail should not
. be allowed to interfere with
development of more playgrounds,
ball fields, soccer fields or any other
athletic fields that are needed at
this time, and in the future, by a
vast majority of the people.
If you would like to witness this
problem in person, go to the City
Park any afternoon at 5 p.m. and
ask any Coach about the problem of
finding a field to practice on. To
further witness the problem of
parking, go to the City Park on a
Saturday morning after Soccer
season begins and the swimming
pool is open.

LETTER TO EDITOR: F
A recent article in the San |
Antonio Light presented informa- ■
tion about the 82,000 students who I
dropped out of middle and high
schools in Texas during the 1988-89
school year. The TEA reported that ‘
these dropouts represented 6.1 i
percent of those enrolled. |
Comparing the State dropout rate i
to BISD’s rate of 1.7% (23 out of ’
1336) shows that the BISD teachers (
and administrators are doing an |
excellent job of identifying and I
aiding the ‘at risk’ students of the • ]
District. We cannot be satisfied j
even with this low dropout rate but I
we must realize that there are many I
reasons for dropping out that are I
beyond the control of the BISD I
staff. The TEA cited the most
common reason for dropouts was
poor attendance. There is very little
that the BISD educators can do if k
the students’ parents don’t see that I
their children come to school. J
The 1990 scholarship awards to 1
Boerne High School graduates again
demonstrates the strong community
support for BISD and the quality of
the students that it produces. ’ I
Twenty-three different community
groups raised funds and rewarded ,
different students for their .
academic achievements. Many
thanks to these fine community
involvement organizations for their I
demonstrated support for the 1
students and the District. I
In April, Saundra Brown I
conducted a seminar on the drug I
and alcohol situation in Kendall I
County. She had been working all I
year as the parent sponsor of the |
Boerne Against Drugs (BAD) school i
group. Saundra and Kathy Felps, I
the new at-risk counselor in BISD, I
were very disappointed at the low • ,
turnout for the seminar and the lack ,
of support from the people who J
claim that there is a “big” drug and J
alcohol problem at BISD. J
Apparently, it is easier to make h
accusations then it is to really go out ■
and become involved in a positive
support group that has made a I
difference for some students. Many I
thanks to Saundra, Kathy, and the 1
other volunteers for their involve- l
ment and support for the students.
If the BISD School Board really is
concerned about the drug and ‛ |
alcohol use in the District, they will J
need to hire a crisis counselor and I
fund the special programs that will I
help students deal with emotional I
