“victim” is and come to attack. All
bees leave this scent on the person’s
skin, he said, leaving an unmis-
takable “come-on” to other bees in
the neighborhood.
Clothing color does not seem to
matter, although coverage of head is
important. One authority suggested
to get to a car, even with a head
covered with bees, close the
windows and the bees would soon
leave the person to hit the windows

to get out, where they could be
killed on the windows.
A Sebastian, Texas, 60 year old
postmaster was weed-eating six feet
from her mobile home on April 13
and was stung “over 400 times. The
hospital attendants quit counting at
that number. Despite dousings with
water by a daughter with hose, the
bees refused to leave until police
and EMS personnel arrived with
road flares to chase the bees away.
“They were five and six deep on my
head,” said the frightened woman.
Hospitalized for three days, it was
two weeks before her “blotches”
cleared and physicians told her she
was “fortunate to still be around.” It
was the 18th attack on humans by.
the Africanized bees in Texas since
they started their migration from
Brazil in 1957.

FOURTEENTH ANNUAL
“FREEDOM AWARD”: Scholar-

The public relations director for
the San Antonio Convention &
Visitors Bureau said she recently
had received dozens of calls from
across the country about the
concern of Africanized honeybees in
the city and stressed that the
ACADEMIC ROYALTY - Laura
Heath, left, and Robbie Shivers,
posing with Principal Sam
Champion, are the valedictorian and
salutatorian, respectively, for the
Boerne High School 1992 gradu-
ating class. Miss Heath, daughter of
Boerne Mayor and Mrs. Pat Heath,
will attend Rice University.

correct information is what she is
trying to get out to tourists. The
$1.5 billion tourist business in the
Alamo City gives San Antonio the
#1 rating as the state’s top tourist
city.
The April 22 swarm identified as
Africanized bees on S.A.’s south
side caused hundred of residents to
call the San Antonio Metropolitan
Health District.
And San Antonio, 30 minutes or
less down the road from Boerne, has
made local residents a shade uneasy
about stories and articles in paper
and on TV about this latest insect
invader with the “killer” nickname.
Biggest concern seems to be for
the elderly and young children.
Although venom is similar, the
fact the bees are aggressive and
attack in swarms takes top priority.
Also that persons with a
sensitivity to venom stings need to
exercise caution; many professional
pest service personnel already carry
benedryl or epinephrine products in
their car pockets.
In today’s S.A. Express News,.
Don Driver quoted Bexar County
Agricultural Extension Service
agent Brent Batchelor as saying
“It’s not time to panic, but time to
become more educated and aware of
Africanized honey bees because
we’re going to have to live with
them for a long time.”
The swarm which hit San Antonio
April 22 was thought to be “far in
advance” of the mainstream of bees
in the Rio Grande Valley. Said an
A&M entomologist, “I don’t know of
a live colony within 150 miles of San
Antonio."
One pesticide authority last week
on radio suggested that in running,
persons attacked should run in a
zig-zag line, rather than straight.
But above all, he suggested that
person had to get away from the
swarm as fast as possible. With a
first bee sting, a scent is left on the
skin, so other bees, even from
different hives, know where the
basketball team. Other students
completing their senior year with .
grade point averages of 96.67 or
better, are Valerie Stanton, Ethan
Schwalbe, Jennifer Noble, Kim
Stubbs, Erica Skogebo, Michelle
Pollock, Aspen Heckman, Bryan
Davis, Geoff Younglove, Brandi
Short, Lisa Reilly, Michael Pruske,
Joseph Horton, Katherine Schultze,
T.G. Rey, Jon Oliver, Catherine
