liam Dunaway, gentleman and schol-
ar, left a 45-pound watermelon at the
Messenger office. As a grower of

The “one penny” sale now going
on at the Decatur Drug Co. is at-
tracting crowds of buyers. This is a
sale that is new to the people of this

Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Crozier of
Frederick, Okla., visited here this

The attention of Marshal Evans
and the sanitary board of the city
council is respectively called to the
frightful condition of the alleys back
of the square. The west alley back of
the square is almost impassable with
filth and dilapidated vehicles. And
is there no ordinance which prohibits
the throwing of watermelon rinds on
the streets and sidewalks? Millions
of flies are created by this filth. Is
there no relief, gentlemen?
A called meeting of the city council ,
was held Monday morning for the
purpose of taking some steps in re-
gard to the reported shortage of gas
in the Electra fields. The word has
been sent out by the gas company at
Electra and Petrolia that the supply
of gas in the fields is limited and all
factories will be cut off September 1.
The council at the meeting Monday
gave Manager Lewis instructions to
make preparations at the water and
light plant to burn oil and coal. The
domestic supply of gas will continue,
but it is feared the company will
boost the price, owing to the shortage.
Mrs. K. M. Borum, after a pro-
longed sickness at her home on South
State street, passed away Tuesday-
morning. The funeral services were
held at the Baptist church, conducted
by the pastor, Rev. Harlan Matthews
and J. L. Ward. After the services .
a large number of sorrowing friends
and relatives followed the remains to
the city cemetery, where the interment
was had. Mrs. Borum was a devout
Christian, one who lived her chrisian-
ity every day She was a patient suf-
ferer and when the end came she was
ready to meet her makar, having liv-
ed up io the teachings of her bible.
Mrs. Borum had numerous friend
and these join the sorrowing relatives
in greiving over the loss of this good
woman.
Miss Vina Belle Worley and Mr.
Ben Watkins were united in marriage
in the parlors of the City Hotel Wed-
nesday afternoon, Rev. Matthews
officiating. Only a few friends and
relatives of the contracting parties
were present to witness this happy
marriage. Immediately after the cer-
emony Mr. and Mrs. Walkins repair-
ed to the home of the groom in South-
west Decatur where they will keep
house. The bride is well known in
Decatur. She is a prominent member
of the Baptist church and takes a
deep interest in all church work. She
is one of the valued members at the
church’s splendid choir, and has fre-
quently taken a leading part in the
special music at the services. Mr.
Watkins has lived in Decatur all his
life and we all know him to be a gent
leman of the first type: honest indust-
rious, and he numbers his friends by
the scores. Messenger wishes this
splendid couple a long and happy

office Wednesday morning.
Officer Watson from Carter county,
Okla , was here Wednesday looking
for a horse thief. After arriving here
the officer came into possession of in
formation that the man he was look-
ing for was in Lubbock county. The
man wanted has been eluding the offi-
cers for two year.
Mr. W. V. Cunningham of Para-
dise. recently nominated for district
clerk, will move shortly to Decatur.

land, Wednesday morning, a girl.
Sheriff Lee Mann returned Monday
night from Calvin, Okla., with Clar-
ence Wilcox, who is charged with a
serious offence in the district.
County Treasurer Crockett Alexan-
der has moved his office upstairs in
the courthouse. He is now occupying
the office formerly used by the tax as
