comfortable symptoms, treatment using a group of drugs called beta-
blockers has proven helpful. As in most patients with a heart murmur,
antibiotics are usually prescribed around the time of dental or surgical

infection of the mitral valve.

hest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations ... sounds like a
heart attack, doesn't it? These common symptoms may ac-
, tually reflect a benign problem called Mitral Valve Prolapse
(M.V.P.). First fully described in the medical literature about
30 years ago,-M.V.P. is a congenital malformation of one of the four
’ heart valves. The result is an abnormal motion of the valve that some-
times causes a heart murmur or a "click-like" sound which is audible
with a stethoscope. 11 is rare for M. V. P. to produce any significant prob-
lem in the way the heart functions, but often, it is associated with symp-
toms such as palpitations, chest pain and shortness of breath which
can masquerade as truly serious heart disease. Since about ten percent
of the general population inherits the dominant gene that produces
M.V.P., and since these symptoms may not occur until patients are in
their 20s, 30s or 40s, the distinction between M.V.P. and coronary ar-
tery disease is frequently quite difficult. The diagnosis is usually made
by a careful physical examination accompanied by an echocardiogram

Editor's note: The continuing epic narrative by Daniel Frosch, "Unto
the Seventh Generation - Part V", described how the family grew and
glowingly detailed his father's business and religious activities.
In addition to revealing how the cornerstones of Adath Yeshurun and
Beth El found their way to the premises of today's Beth Yeshurun, Part
VI takes a look at the Frosches' extended family.
Frosch offers anyone support and help in putting together a genealogy
study of his or her own family, with suggestions for outlining (a family
tree). His telephone number is (713) 668-4730.
For those who would also like to establish their own genealogy, but
do not have the time to put it into Story form - there is a literary pro-
fessional in Houston who would be pleased to discuss such "LifeStories"
MEDICAL NEWS FROM THE MAIMONIDES

Maimonides Society, discussing topics in medicine of general interest,

the 30th Maimonides column on a current medical topic:
THE MISHPACHA (THE
EXTENDED FAMILY)
I had mentioned at the outset
that I would try to describe
something about how my life and
the lives of all our family were af-
fected by the aunts, uncles, and
cousins with whom we were in
constant and dose contact. I will
try to do this by taking each fam-
ily on Papa's side and then two -
but much larger - families on
Mama's side.

Treatment is usually aimed at patient education and reassurance as

At about the time that my brother

because they demonstrate
Papa's activities in the Jewish life
of Houston, but because the oth-

well-known to my generation, and
perhaps to some of the succeed-
ing generations. Many continued

over a very long time. On one side
of the Adath Yeshurun stone, there
is inscribed in Hebrew the name
of the congregation and the He-
brew dates equivalent to 1891 and
1908. Below the Hebrew, the fol-
lowing appears in English: Con-
gregation Adath Yeshurun, Char-
