Both the Shepherd and Westheimer (pictured above) locations of Whole
Foods Market provide shoppets with epicurean and healthy specialties.
Abandoned and neglected, the
neighborhood bank building on
the corner of Beechnut and Endi-
cott at the edge of Meyerland
Plaza had until recently been
caught in a tangled web of FDIC
litigation and Resolution Trust
foreclosures. But as of Mar. 2,
Fondren National Bank has given
the building a new lease on life
and revitalized neighborhood
banking with the relocation of its
North Braeswood location to the
site.
Area residents and bank cus-
tomers will immediately note the
changes as a result of Fondren
National Bank's opening. The ex-
terior has been updated, with a
fresh coat of paint covering the
original brick, colorful awnings
accenting windows, new land-
scaping and a resurfaced parking
lot. The interior has been modi-
fied slightly to accommodate its
new residents.
Built in 1961 as a part of the
development of the Meyerland
subdivision, the building original-
ly housed the Meyerland Bank
(1961-1988). It was used for
NBC/Meyerland Bank (1988-
1990) until that institution was
acquired by NCNB Texas (1990)
before it was closed. "It ap-
parently did not fit their "for-
mula" which was unfortunate for
a building with such a history,"
