train disgorged passengers at a
brand new siding in a cow pasture
not far from Waco. By noon, it was a
bustling city of 50,000, with lemon-
ade stands, restaurants, a midway
with a carnival and even a jail.
"By nightfall it was deserted,
silent, a ghost town on the Texas
prairie. What was the lure? Not oil,
not gold. It was a planned train
wreck, an advertising stunt by Mr.
Crush. The operators had tied the

A program of Texana was enjoyed
at the Woman’s Culture Club Texas
Day luncheon, held Monday at the
clubhouse.
The event began with a reading on
early Texas history by Mrs. Edgsr
James Moss.
Mrs. H.T. Harrison gave a brief
history of the writing of the song
“Hills of Home,” by Oscar J. Fox, to
whom a monument has been built
near Marble Falls. The song was
inspired by the hills of Central
Texas. Fox was a native of Burnet
County. Mrs. Joe Studebaker fol-
lowed with a piano solo of the song.
Mrs. Harrison continued the pro-
gram with tid-bits of Texas history,
many taken from “Texas: Amazing
but True.” by Jack Maguire, now
living in Fredericksburg.
She told of the first and only
planned train wreck in the history of
Texas railroads: "Crush was the
name of a boom town, where in the
Lone Star State, boom towns were as
common as horned frogs,” she said.
"Crush has a special place in
history. It was born at dawn,
