For over fifty years, the Texas Good
Roads Association has led the fight for
highway progress in Texas . . . helping
establish the first State Highway office,
centralizing control of the system, fighting
off unsound financing schemes, and com-
batting efforts to divert tax revenues paid
by highway-users away from highway pur-
poses.
Texans from all walks of life belong to
TGRA because highways are the lifeline-of
our state’s progress and prosperity and,
since 1913, TGRA has been the only citizens

organization working for highway progress.;
TGRA serves an invaluable purpose ini
making certain that highway users get a
dollar s worth of road for every tax dollar
paid. TGRA is on the job, working to stop
any movement which would take tax dol-
lars out of the highway fund for other
spending projects and thus slow down or
stall Texas highway progress.
Non-profit and non-political, TGRA
works unselfishly for Texans—that is why
leaders in so many communities, including
Ennis, take special pride in their Texas Good
Roads Association membership.

bombings this summer. It’s a
dangerous situation.”
"Isn't there any way you can
guarantee these women’s safety
when they return?” I asked.
“I dont have enough men to
put special guards on their
। homes,” Chief Guy replied.
। “There’s no danger in the day-
time. It’s at night. If they come
back, I would advise them t o
ease into town without letting
anyone know about it. They
can’ t go back to their old
homes because they were bomb
| ed. So they should find a place
, to stay with somebody else.
“This thing is doing us a lot
I of harm all over the country,”
; the chief of police concluded.
I I asked how it was possible
I that Mrs. Alyene Quin’s home
auxiliary police and it’s
and the Society Baptist Church
could be bombed on the same
night—September 20.
“They were in directly oppo-
site areas, each on the outskirts
of the town,” Chief Guy said.
“We had no idea it was going to
happen.”
America’s Conscience Fund—
headed by Governor Pat Brown
of California and Charles Taft
of Cininnati; has now contrib-
uted $1,000 toward the rebuild
ing of the church. However—its
funds are running low. There
have been 14 churches bombed
in Mississippi since the first of
the year, and it has no money
to help individuals rebuild
their dynamited homes.
But the prevention of the dy-
nalmiting beforehand rather
I han repairing the damage after
ward should be the main goal—
and even more important is the
repairing of the damage in
men’s hearts. For these prob-
lems the Justice Department had
no answers .
“We’re not running a police I
state,” Bourke Marshall told
the three Mississippi women
when they called on him. “We
are doing everything we can.

Willie got nine months in jail

will happen to you.”
He was referring to the
Council of Federated Organiza-

withdrawal, a wave of violence
has broken out in McComb
against Negroes who cooperated
with the Freedom Workers.
Since September 6 there have
