ALL FIGURES IN THIS REPORT ARE PRELIMINARY AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. All
1986 motor vehicle traffic accident data in this report is based on reports
and information available on July 20, 1986. To insure proper comparison,
figures for previous years are based on reports and information available on
July 20 of each year.
NOTE: Beginning with January 1, 1983 accidents, a death is not counted if it
occurs more than 30 days after the accident date. Beginning in 1978, fatal-
ities were counted when an injury resul-ed in death within 90 days of the
motor vehicle accident. Previous to 1978, fatalities resulting from an injury
accident were counted anytime prior to the close out date for the accident
year. Because of the change in reporting requirements, fatal accidents and
deaths for 1983 and subsequent years cannot be compared with prior years;
however, about 99% of all deaths occur within 30 days of the accident date.1
