HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1 WHEREAS, Volunteerism in Texas has a long and storied history
2 that fills citizens of the Lone Star State with pride, and the Texas
3 Legislature is pleased to honor the many individuals who dedicate
4 themselves to helping others; and
5 WHEREAS, Perhaps the earliest example of volunteerism. in
6 Texas took place in 1836, when 189 like-minded individuals banded
7 together to defend the Alamo; this event set the stage for future
8 generations of volunteers, and today millions of Texans devote
9 themselves to altruistic causes; and
10 WHEREAS, Whether serving as a mentor, teaching someone to
11 read and write, making a financial contribution to a charitable
12 cause, or helping Texas families move from welfare to work,
13 countless Lone Star State citizens are united in their efforts to
14 help those less fortunate than themselves; and
15 WHEREAS, President Bush has issued a call for all Americans
16 to volunteer service, to commit themselves to a minimum of 4,000
17 hours; and
18 WHEREAS, Programs such as Governor Perry's OneStar
19 Foundation seek to "empower Texans in need with the help of
20 volunteers dedicated to meeting need"; the goal of the OneStar
21 Foundation is to work with state and local organizations and direct
22 volunteers to the areas where they are needed most; and
23 WHEREAS, Volunteers are the lifeblood of charities and
24 nonprofit organizations, and the members of the Texas Legislature
