The Political Crank—Secret Political So-
cieties.
Editor Liobt:;
1 have seen tbe report ot a speech de-
livered at an Interior town In Texas by a
disappointed politician who lays his de-
feat at tbe door ot a motion he made in
tbe democratic convention at Galveston
some time since sgainst secret political
societies. This man certainly bas not
read tbe history of bls own party or he
would have learned that tbe Tammany
society is a secret society and the bead
center of tbe democratic party tbe first
president of wblcb was George Washing-
ton If 1 am not mistaken. All
patties meet In secret caucuses.
He refers to the union league
“a* once so odious." Why was It (of
Because it advocated something what
it was not allowed to do publicly tbo
support of the reconstruction of the gov-
ernment—and it might be well to state
just here that during tbe reign of tbe
Union leagues (uot loyal leagues as
this man and bls like love to
call that organization) there existed
secret societies of tbe democratic penu-
•ion called tbe ku-kluz wbore alm and
avowed objects were lawlessness and
crime. These facts bsve been eetsblleb-
ed by evidence from tbelr own mouths
and one of official judicial record. Their
act* were admitted by thelrown lawyer
tbe late Hon. Revendy Jobnton to have
been of unparralled attrooity— while
no proof has yet been made to establish
such charges against the
On tbe contrary.they were organized In
tbe Interest of peace law and order
and for tbe equal rights of all men before
tbe law. The doctrine of Ibis crank
against political societies being secret

even despotic Russia as history show*.
Tbe men who advocated tbe principle*
now embodied In our constitutions
nations! and state were prevented from
organizing and meeting and advocating
their unalienable rights in public and
fortheir own and the public welfare
did so in private. This I*

offending.” Within my own knowledge
tbelr meeting* were broken up by
mobs in the very town where this crank
aloresald cursed publicly. In tbe name
of God and W likes Booth for bls assas-
sination of Lincoln and tbey were
driven to meet in secret In self-defence
and then are co denined for doing to
whip this crank and his followers made
necessary to save life and to secure
peace and freedom.
In a word If it be wrong to allow
such political societies then tbey snould
be suppressed by tbe strong arm of the
law.
The democratic convention was wiser
than their would be solon a member of
congressand repudiated bls onslaught
on liberty and In time the crank him-
self was suppressed. A. T. Monrok.

"Make borne beautiful and pleasant”
Is an old maxim and In order to do this
work should begin at tbe bottom that
i*—on the floor. Only good house-
keepers have a fair and proper concep-
tion of bow much an ornament a nice
carpet is on tbe floor. Tbe largest and
finest assortment of carpets in all quali-
ties and patterns in all western Texas Is
to be found at L. Wolfson’s. This gen-
tleman bas now In stock in sufficiently
large quantities tbe following goods':
A magnificent and well selected lot of
“body brussels” in many shades and
patterns; plain bruasels in all colors;
three-ply's and Ingrains from the best
manufacturles in tbe United States and
to keep up the useful with tbe orna-
mental Mr. Wolfson bas in connection
with tbe foregoing a full supply of hemp
carpetcocoa and Chinese strawplain and
ornamental mattings and lenoleum. In
connection with the foregoing it must
be remembered that Mr. Wolfson keeps
a full supply of all kinds sizes and pat
terns of rugs and matts to match car-
pets.
He Cut the Wrong Meat.
Cbieslick a genial employe of George
Dullnig seized a big knife this morning
to cut some bacon. He did not out the
bacon but be managed to slice off tbe
end of one of his fingers. When Chies-
lick saw the b-lood be fainted but a lib-
eral application of water restored him
to bis senses.
Beautifying the Arbelter Vereln Hall.
A very Interesting meeting of tbe Ar-
beiter Verein was held last night when
it was decided to remodel tbelr hall and
to place another story upon it. The
plans of Wahrenberger A Co. for these
desirable improvements have bet n adop-
ted and the work will be done as soon
as possible.
MILLINERY NOTES.
Probably In no branch of business Is at
present so much activity displayed as in
that of the mystic art of millinery and
all its thereunto belongings. Just now
the millinery department of L. Wolfson
is filled with a larger number of ladies
every aay viewing and admiring and
making tbelr choice. “Isn’t it a beauty
isn’t It a darling” and similar
expressions are beard ftom the lips ot
admiring visitors all day. Tbe display In
straw goods for tbe coming season Is
more than profuse in style and quality.
Tuscan lace and other fancy straw
braids and rough braids vary tne p aln
Milan. Florence and English split straw
braids. Mr. Wolfson bas left nothing
undone to make bl* stock of trimmed
and untrimmed bats and bonnets as
large and complete In all its branches so
as to outdo snd surpass everything ever
done in that department before
in this city. Another specialty
Is large miscellany of fine and
artistically constructed “pattern hats”
consisting of the various color* In straw
Clain fancy and ornamental dress leg-
orn with plain and fancy brim. It
must be borne in mind that these pat-
terns are all strict copies from the styles
of tbe leading Paris (France) modiste*
and true representations of tbe ruling
fashions. Wolfson’s stock of trimmings
is equal to tbe large stock of unfinished
bats bonnets and other bead wear con-
sisting of feathers fancy and plain
plumes wings ostrich plumes of all
grades French and American flowers of
all tbe various kinds designs and forms.
Ornament* straw and fancy gimp
braids. Tne ribbon department is equal-
ly well supplied buge show cases being
filled with rolls of tbe finest silk satin
and grosgrain ribbons ranging in num-
bers from (1) to (30.) of at least one hun-
dred different shades while special at-
tention has been paid in getting a full
supply of Moire grosgrain and velvet
sash ribbons in all grades shades and
widths. Ladies will find It profitable to
first go to Wolfson’s and examine his
stock before going elsewhere; the com-
parison will always turn out to be in bi*
favor regarding quality and price In
millinery never beard of before.
MATERIA-MEDICS.
IN STAR CHAMBER SESSION A -
A Coterie of Saviours of Servers of Sal-
vers of Sounders and of Sanitarians
Seen Sanguinely.
Tbe West Texas Medics) Association
composed of a good deal of Medical
brains skill and nerve more especially
tbe latter assembled in general pow-
wow at their wigwam Id tbe couoty
court room last night.
For a wonder the opposing faction*
among tbe doctor* of tbl* city laid aside
tbeir shafts of venom and jealousy for a
short while or at least until after the
secretary read tbe roll call only to again
take up the keenest weapons or Instru-
ments tbey possessed I. e. tbe
polite speech and keen criticism that
Is always fsr worse than open fault find-
ing and direct abuse. A good many of
tbe doctors were there became they ex-
pected a row and the voting upon of an
Important question; tbst of tbe race
question wbetber a colored man was
eligible ss a member. After a great
many speeches bv the learned and lib-
eral-minded gentlemen. In which the
ethics were handled without gloves and
tbe color question also it was decided
not to admit tbe descendant of Ham as
a member of tbe association the only
objection being that he was a negro. He
was skillful and a gentleman with
a good practice ete. but unfor-
tunately. he was colored and If the
association were to give another an-
nual banquet with champagne and Ineb-
riated trimmings It would not be com-
patible with tbe feelings of the while
members of tbe association to sit down
to the table with the colored member
and it might establish a precedent In tbe
State association and even bring about
tbe eligibility of the colored race as doc-
tors and members of medical a socla-
tlons throughout the south.
Before this Interesting and highly ele-
vating discussion came up. the reporter
of tbe mornlnv dally was given a bint
that no member of the press was wel-
come witbin tbe sacred domain of
tbe west Texas sawbones and be
gracefully lifted bls bat snd withdrew;
then tbey felt safer and knew that tbeir
names would not go down to posterity
or out among their suffering patients of
tbe white race as voting for or against
the colored man. A great many voted
for blm.
Another Interesting discussion «ro-e
regarding the eligibility of another ap-
plicant a white man. His application
was also refused because reports came of
a little indictment In another state for
some cause.
Then two new members who swal-
lowed the ethics by-laws rules paper
cover and all were elected and
tben there was a devil of a
racket kicked up on the question
ot a reconsideration of tbe fees bill.
Some of tbe doctors who had a good
practice anyhow didn’t object to treat-
ing tbe poor gratis although tbe
“ethics” provide against this. The im-
pecunious fellows were In for a certain
rate for different cases. One fellow
wanted every doctor who was called In
a case of simple child labor to charge
something like $25. And if it was a case
ofdilllcult labor tbe fee should be rich
or poor alike $35 and no less.
Tben tbe question of ethics arose
hydra-beaded and was dissected and
strung together again much tbe same as
a fresh corpse out of tbe grave-yard or
as an old skeleton on wire In a student’s
room.
After this came the discussion who
would become delegates to go to tbe
State Association meeting. Those who
had patients to attend did not want to
go and tbe others wouldn’t go since tbe
interstate commerce bill and no-more-
free-pass system went into effect. It was
finally decided to make it open for any-
body except homeopaths and other non-
members. All or none could go. Prob-
ably none will go.
Tben tbe window at the back of the
room was closed to keep the draft from
centering upon anyone’s vitals the man
who left It open whether he was janitor
or anybody else was satisfied that the
bare walls had ears and the West Texas
Medical Society of the nineteenth cen-
tury ended its star chamber session by
adjourning to the outer air where the
smell ot Ipecac and iodoform was dis-
solved in thin air and tbe gaping jaws
of the death-foreboding forceps ;were
for the time being closed and pocketed.
Hit With an Express Wagon.
Two former partners Gustav Peltzer
and Paul Grona fought at the former's
saloon yesternay afternoon at 6:30
o’clock because of an old difficulty re-
sulting from their business Grona at-
tacked Peltzer and “did him up” and
was in turn attended to by the recorder
this morning to tbe tune of $l5. while
Peltzer was fined $7. Grona claims
Peltzer bad a pair of brass knuckles and
Peltzer and witnesses state that Grona
used a child’s express wagon as a club
on Peltzer.
A charge of assault bas also been made
against Grona in Justice McAllister’s
court.
