Platform of the Anti-Prohibition Party
Adopted at Dallas May 4th 1887.
1. We oppose the pending prohibition
amendment because It II a proposition
to change our form of government from
a free republic of sovereign and inde-
f indent citizens to a species of paternal-
urn hateful to our people. It will take
from the citizen his moat sacred and in-
alienable rights and add to and augment
the powers of government and is there-
fore undemocratlo and anti-republican.
2. We oppose thia amendment beoauae
it ia sumpt nary and will vex the citizens
and interfere with individual liberty.
3. We oppose this amendment because
it ia at war with the fundamental prin-
cipals of Anglo-Saxon civilization and
will destroy that Inalienable right of the
citizen to determine for himself how he
shall pursue hie own happiness without
interference with the rights of otbera
which principle ia the basis of our liber-
ties and the sole hope for perpetuity of
our Institutions.
4. We oppose thia amendment because
its enforcement will entail upon the
government the necessity of promoting
a bj stem of spies and informers detesta-
ble to our people and the enactment ot
extreme legislation of doubtful constitu-
tionality and under the sanction ot
which our homes may be searched our
property seized and our dearest rights
invaded. Texas can not hope to escape
these curses which have invariably
attended similar experiments in other
places.
5. Its adoption will suppress the gen-
eral use of milder stimulants and en-
courage the use of the strong drinksand
thus retard the advancement of genuine
teuiperan e. It will stamp as criminal
the manufacture of wines from our do-
mestic grapes for family purposes and
will degrade our drug stores into dram*
shops and elevate our doctors into auto-
crats of our appetites.
6. It will enable the rich to import
and use their liquors without taxation
or restraint and will prohibit only
those of our people who are too poor to
buy their liquors in unbroken packages;
and under its operation the saloon will
give place to the gilded club room for
the rich while the poor will be forced
to make their purchases at low dives
and In violation of law. Such class leg-
islation Is odious to our people and con-
trary to free government.
7. It proposes by the preponderance
of a majority in certain sections of the
state to fasten by force on other sections
a theory of moral and social conduct and
habits distasteful and repugnant to the
latter. The varied Interests of the sec-
tions In our state have been a prolific
source of care and thought In our states-
manship and this amendment If
adopted will engender a hostile public
sentiment in certain localities fatal to
its enforcement and thus beget a disre-
spect for law and disregard of constitu-
tional authority and will produce last-
ing and permanent evil to our people
and tend to disrupt the state.
8. It proposes to confiscate and de-
stroy. without compensation large prop-
erty interests of our people. It will un-
settle business and Impair property
values paralyze fora period at least
the commercial Interests of our state
and destroy great industries already in
operation for the manufacture ot the
milder stimulants. It will abolish the
source of our public revenues fully one-
third and increase to a corresponding
amount the burden upon lands and the
necessaries of life already over-bur-
deued with the exactions of government.
9. The zealous adherents of this pro-
hibition idea have already established
and organized a third political party and
have waged relentless warfare upon the
principles and organization of the other
established parties; instigated by for-
eign emissaries they have by agitation
for years secured from the legislature of
our state the concession of this proposi-
tion to change our organic law and by
studied purpose and concerted move-
ment they now seek to stifle political
expr. scion from our people until their
political designa are fully accomplished.
We warn our people ot this threatened
danger and call upon them to rebuke at
the pods this sinister conspiracy against
their political organizations and the
fundamental principles of American lib-
erty.

ran out fully fifty feet on tbetiee before either

heap and were afterward pulled out with
hardly a scratch.

The gissl lieople of an Irish town were
lately startled by the sight of enormous post-
ers on which a Lenten lecture was announced
as follows:

The Reverend Canon
“Descended into Hell.’’
You are all affectionately invited.
At a recent bail at the Hotel de Ville Paris
the drinks consumed included 50000 bocks at
twenty centimes each 2500 bottles of cham-
pagne and 3000 punches making an average
of aliout six bocks one-third of a bottle of

The Mercantile library In New York city is
practically owned and entirely managed by
clerks. In order to vote or hold office a mem-
ber must be a clerk or working on salary in
some mercantile office. The library contains
217000 volumes making It the fifth largest in
the country. First comes the Congressional
at Washington second the Boston Public
library third the Harvard university and
fourth the Astor.
A few years ago a gentleman of Washing-
ton bought an old trunk at an auction sale
for twenty-five cents It was filled with rub-
bish and the buyer sent it borne intending to
have it cleaned out This was done a few
days ago and the trunk was found to con-
tain a solid silver shield which appears to
have been on the coffin of George Washing-
ton. The plate from the casket has been
missing ever since the attempt to steal the re-
mains in 1837.
THE LITTLE ONES.
“Now Johnny” said the patient teacher
“put away that pocket knife and pay atten-
tion to what I am saying. If you hail an
apple which you wished to divide with your
little sister how much would you give her?”
“I’d give her the core” said Johnny.—

Little Elsie was playing with a kitten the
other day when suddenly it scratched her
hand. For a moment Elsie’s astonishment
was too great for words then in a tone of
mingled indignation and surprise she ex-
claimed: “Why mamma! pussy's dot pins in
her feets.”—Charleston Enterprise.
A very little fellow has a very lively tongue
and talks so much at meals that on a recent
occasion when there were to be guests at the
table his elder brother bribed him with a
nickel to be still. After ten minutes of silence
the little boy whispered anxiously to his
brother: “Arthur Arthur mayn’t I talk a
cent’s worth P—American Hebrew
“How do you spell knee mamma?” said a
small boy looking up from his slate.
“K-n-e-e Johnny.” Silence for several
moments while the letters were going down
laboriously. And then he asked: “How do
you spell grow?" “G-r-o-w.” More scratch-
ing with the pencil. “Now I’ve got it!”
Johnny exclaimed. “Kn-M ne g-r-o-w

Little Ben’s grandfather was afflicted with
a very lame leg and the small grandson was
wont to pray for it every night. After
awhile however he evidently grew tired of
it and one evening arranged matters in this
way: “O Lord" he prayed as usual “bless
grandpa's lame leg.” Then struck with a
happy idea he settled bis obligations once for
all: “O Lord bless everybody’s legs! Amen.”
—Harper’s Magazine.
Nelly whose grandfather began life as a
cabin boy and finished as a millionaire was
paid by her mother one cent a dozen for pins
picked up from the carpet to keep the baby
from getting them. “Nurse” said Neily as
her stock of pennies increased “do you know
what I am going to do when I have six
cents?” “No” answered nurse. "I am going
to buy a paper of pins and scatter them over
tbe floor and then pick them up” replied the
young financier who was hardy 5 years old.

WHAT EYES ARE SAID TO SHOW.
Generally speaking blue eyes signify con-
stancy and devotion to friends.
Black eyes denote as a rule a sensuous
character and an inconstant fickle disposi-
tion. However there are some noted excep-
tions to this rule.
The main characteristics of the violet eye
which is called the woman’s eye are affec-
tion and purity chivalric belief and limited
or deficient intellectuality.
Gray eyes are the most expressive of all
eyes and denote strong qualities of mind and
soul. Persons with gray eyes usually have a
great deal of patriotism.
Self satisfaction and conceit are commonly
the characteristic traits represented by the
green eye. When the tinge verges on yellow-
ishness it denotes that the possessor is gifted
with strong powers of imagination.
The very light blue eye is characteristic of
the northern races and in a woman it sug-
gests constancy and truth steadfastness sim-
plicity courage and purpose. In a man it
is apt to denote a phlegmatic disposition.
Brown eyes are the eyes ot the south and
east and denote as a general rule passion and
lack of originality. In women they mean
jealousy aud cruelty very often and in men
courage superstition and mild recklessness.
Blue eyes usually go with light hair but
when they go with dark hair and complexion
there is coupled with the affectionate quali-
ties a tendency to deceive stimulated by an
ambition for conquest and leading to ths
gratification of admiration.
Justice.
A man who bad gouged another fellowk
eye out was brought into court.
“Do you plead guilty to this charger asked
the judge.
“Yes.”
“That’s right” said bis honor nibbing hil
bands cheerfully. “An aye for an eye. Mr.
Clerk fine him S 3 and a glass eye for th*
complainant”—Charleston Enterprise.
