COUNTING THE BALLOTS.
There is a general demand for a better and
more speedy method of counting ballots at
elections in our state. A good idea would be
to have the counting commence at 12 o’clock
on the day of election to be carried on in
same apartment with the judges of election by
a committee selected by the judges from each
contesting political par'y and continued until
the polls closed without intermission and dis-
closure of result guarded against until fina
result is reached. Some change is necessary
Texas is far behind other states in this par-
ticular.
Major Ochiltree Out on Duty.
Galveston November 14. —Major Ochiltree
left to-day for a trip through the district to
consult with prominent men concerning the
best interests of each county. Leading busi-
ness men on the Strand are indignant at the
assertion made by interested parties that the
election of Major Ochiltree will prejudice the
business interests of the city and divert any
trade from its usual channel. Major Ochil-
tree was elected as the advocate of deep wrter
at this and other Texas ports and theelectioi
shows that he was not only supported by lead
ing merchants of this city but was elected bj
a democratic vote and prominent demcorats
here express themselves perfectly satisfied
with the result.
Returns from the different counties are so
slow about coming in that it is still a matter ot
time to know as to who are the successf d can-
didates for the state senate and legislature
both sides claiming the victory.
Laredo November 14. — The rangers
brought to this city yesterday Mr. J. Haynes

bond of five thousand dollars to' answer
There was no direct evidence against him.

The Mexican was arrested.
Postmaster Ford was to-day relieved from

has been here several days looking into the
atiairs of the office and found Mr. Ford short
some several hundred dollars.

An international sheep show will be held at

Catching a Rabbit for HU Girl.
From the Chkatgo Herald.
An Oscar Wilde young man who fives on
the north side and smokes cigaretts heated his
adorned express a wish for a rabbit. \Van-
cering at dusk past a residence surrounded by
a spacious lawn and pondering upon the pos-
sibilities of raising luere enough to purchase a
long-eared pet for the damsel his attention
was attracted by a white object on the lawn.
Closer examination showed it to be a rabbit.
In the shadow of some shrubs the little ani-
mal sat on its haunches with ears erect. He
chuckled to himself as he saw how he could
save the money he was going to burr <w to buy
a rabbit with and yet get the rabbit. He
climbed the fence undismayed’by the four-inch
gosh in his wall-paper trousers and stole Soft-
ly upon the unsuspecting rabbit. The rabbit
never stired. Taking off his elegant tile that
he had stood Dunlap off for that morning he
pounced upon the poor thing and jammed the
nat down Over it and the two white ears
stuck up through the new tile-top. It was an
iron rabbit.

this country.
The Duchess of Sutherland was one of the
English beauties. She was for years mistress
of the robes to Queen Victoria and her private
friend and confident. Tne queen in reeogni
tion of her services and friendship conferred
upon the duchess in her own right the title of
Countess of Cromartie and Viscountess Tar-
bat anil as a special mark of distinction caused
the patent to be made out allowing her second
son Francis the subject of this notice and his
heirs to inherit the title at bis deuth. Under
this patent Lord Tarbat assumes his mother's
inferior title as Viscount Tarbat and at her
death he will succeed to the title; of Earl of
Cromartie.
He is provided for to enable him to support
and continue the Earldom of Cromartie with
proper {dignity.
The Duchess represents the Huy family (the
Marquis of Tweeddale’s) the females of which
have the reputation of being most virtuous
and beautiful. All have married wellbeing
united to persons of wealth and distinction.
The family have made the best marriages in
England.
Ims is Lord Tarbat’s second visit to America
but he never got so far south before. He is
compelled to be home at Christmas and having
overstayed his time at other places his visit
here has been very brief. He is however
much pleased with the city and promises to
come to Sun Antonio next year. He left last
night for the city of Mexico.
Mr. Alex. O. McKellar who accompanies
Lord Tarbat is his private secretary and is a
gentleman of considerable culture well known
in British literary circles.
It is stated sub rosu that the Sutherland
family have made large purchases of land in
Texas and there are good grounds for believ-
ing this is true.

Vic Horton.
She and a Bravo Bind and Beat Ilie Keeper
of a House of 111 Repute.
A woman in male attire and a Mexican bravo
brutully la-at and attempted to rob Vic Hor-
ton the keeper of a house of ill repute on Ui-
redo st reet night before last.
Horton a small blonde woman who is also
known by the name of Barrett was sitting
alone in her house about half past 10 o'clock
Monday night when two dark forms suddenly
appealed beside her and a husky voice demand-
ed her money and jewels. Frightened she
gave utterance to an ejaculation and stinted
away from her nocturnal visitors. Before she
could take the second step she was rudely
seized and thrown to the floor one of her
assailants the smaller of the two placed a
hand over her mouth to stifle her cries and
then aided by the larger dragged her
some distance out in the jard buck of the
house. Horton struggled and clasped her
smaller antagonist in her arms when she dis-
covered that she was not in contact with a boy.
as she had first sup;>owd but a woman dis-
?uised. She endeavored to secure a look 111 the
aces of the two but was prevented once by
them and subsequently by the darkness. The
man a tall lusty fellow struck her with his
fists several times uttering frightful impreca-
tions as he did so. To better attain his ends the
man forced her to the ground anil there held
her while the women bound her legs and het
armsso tightly that she could scarcely move.
The two then-searched her clothing and ob
tained possession of her bunch of kej s. While
so doing they kicked her and tore her dressun-
til the upper part was in shreds. Not finding
any valuables about her the robbers became
very angry and vented their anger by beating

and her captors beeoining alarmed
quitted the premises taking her keys
with them A few moments after the)
left she broke her ties and tottered into the
house where she was found bruised and bleed-
ing. Later in the night she saw two pl-rsous
moving about her yard She cried to them
but they did not reply. A friend who wn-
with her volunteered to examine the premises
but he found nothing which would mid to un>
suspicion1 he might entertain. Horton how-
ever believes that the persons were those who
previously assaulted her. She was ill all day
yesterday. Efforts will be made to tiscerfain
her assailants. Owing to the suddeness of the
attack and the darkness about her house it is
doubtful if she could recognize them but on
that point she is not certain.

Cano'* Corpse.
Editor of the Evening Light.
Dear Sih: Please allow me also to state the
facts about the corpse of Cano found in Moke's
camp yard incorrectlj referred to in this
morning's Express nt least as far as it con-
cerns Mr. Sheern informing me that the man
was not dead. But a short while after the man
was found I was summoned by the police offi-
cers to examine the body and see what should
be done with it. I found the man a corpse
with all signs of fsisitive death and I at once
furnished a burial permit. Taking the whole
evidence from the brother and other parties
in consideration there was no indication that
the man died from unnatural causes and an
inquest therefore was not required. I heard
several hours after I left the place rumors
that the man was not “quite” dead and of
course I inquired for the reason. I found that
other physicians also examined the body and
pronounced the man dead: this | communi-
cated to Mr Sheern and nothing else. Re-
porters should be very careful in publishing
sick and death reports without official authori-
ty. Very respectfully
R. Menger City Physician.

Who Did It ?
Laredo Nov. 12 18S2.
Editor Evening Light:
Dear Sir — Permit me to add to your cor-
respondent’s account of the election in this
district a few items that evidently escaped his
notice.
As to the woik done the reduction of the
democratic majority is sufficient evidence.
And honor to whom honor is due.
The republican success is mainly due to the
efforts of Col. N. G. Brewster deputy collec-
tor of customs and Col. J. N. Camp com-
bined with other republicans.
Had earlier organization been effected an
increased gain would hate been the result.
However the “Lone Star” has come to the
front and barely done its duty and republi-
caas can only regret the defeat of Gov. E. J.
Davis. Yours &c„
