How Fire Engines are Delayed.
Two prominent city attorneys have informed
a Light reporter that they were present at fire
station No. 1 soon after the alarm of fire was

The Result of It.
The Recorder’s court docket was very light
this morning. Thomas Wahr. charged with
fighting was fined $5. For using insulting
Imnruaue G. E. Dye was fined 85. E. C. Rey-
nolds ttir being drunk was mulcted into a s•>
penalty. George Micklin for vagrancy was
fined $lO and is now giving the city a laboi
equivalent.
Au Accidental Shot.
Three Mexicans are now in custody for firing
on the Austin train one having been since
arrested. Their names are Clemento Rodri-
guez Rafaelo Albarado and Pancho Garcia
They are charged with detaining the I niteu
States mail. It is stated that the accused de-
clare the shot to have been accidental but the
evidence is opposed to the assertion. Several
eases of a like character have lately occurred
endangering puciie traffic.
Governor Davis Residence Offered for Sale.
The resilience of the late Governor Davis at
Austin Texas is offered for Bile. This place
stands on the banks of the Colorado and com-
mands a lovely view of the river hills and city
of Austin. It was formerly the resilience ot
Judge Amos Morrill of the Inited States
court and since it became the propertv ol
Governor Davis it has been largely added to
and the grounds planted with choice shrubery
and trees. It is the choicest site at the capital
and should meet with ready sale.
It Is Really Good and Useful
Mr. T. A. O'Connor is soliciting purchasers
for the Pocket Manual and Handy Reference
Book for Writers and Travelers of which the
Rev. John M. Heron A. M. is editor. It con-
tains a dictionary of synonyms foreign quota-
tions instruction upon composition parlia-
mentary rules etiquette language of flowers
and is indeed the “ pith of many volumes."
A more useful and cheaper pocket book cannot
be found. Mr O’Connor will supply the work
or it can be obtained at Holland s Tea store 14
Commerce street.
Rohmer to be Released.
Justice Adam yesterday granted a liond in
• two sureties of S-Kk) for the apl>earance of An-
drew Rohmer charged with an assault with
intent to kill Officer Bishop and ithas been
signed by Mr. Fest and another gentleman. It
is stated that he will be released to-day and
will return home to bis family.
Three doctors attended the city jail yester-
day to dress bis wounds but he declined to al-
low them do so say ing that lie wanted to die.
The wounds as reported are not serious but it
is considered that there is danger in neglect-
ing them as mortification may ensue.
The Health of the Ulty.
Nine deaths were recorded last week. Of
these eight were white and one colored. The
majority of deaths were due from diseases of
the respiratory organs and lungs five being
a» r Tibed to consumption two to pneumonia
and one to bronchitis. The other death was
from heart disease. There were two deaths in
tin- First ward five in the Second and two in
the Third. No deaths are reported from the
Fourth ward. Three of the deceased were
strangers who had vainly sought health in the
salubrious climate of San Antonio.
Cotton Came High Then.
Mr. F. Halff.of Galveston is suing tbe I nited
States Government for damages amounting to

The suit is based upon the interception and
destruction of cotton during the war at winch
time -Mr. Half! was a citizen of France. The
onlv safe outlet for traffic at that period was
through the Mexican shipping ports from
whence it was shipped to Euro|*e. Mr. Halt!
alleges that cotton was illegally seized and des-
troyed. aud claims damages. Mr. P. McManus

The Lives of Representative Thompson and
Yesterday afternoon Representative Thomp-
son and his little son went carriage riding.
The vehicle was in charge of a negro named
John. When at Government hill the driver
alighted and the horses took fright and ran at
full s[>eed down the hill toward the city. Lol-
onel Thompson was thrown out. The little boy
was then the only occupant ot the carriage.
The horses ran up Avenue C and turned into
Houston street where they collided with Mr.
R. A. Holland’s buggv. then standing tn trout
of his store. Mr. Holland’s buggy was upset
but the carriage was not materially injured.
The boy was not hurt. Colonel Thonipoon was
severely shaken and somewhat cut and bruised
about the head.

Mr. John Rudy formerly clerk at the Hord
hotel is now clerk at the Monger.
Mrs. Gilbert mother of Ed. Gilbert a freight
clerk at the International depot is seriously
ill.
Mr. Leo Tarleton has gone to La Salle county
to prosecute the suit brought by Mr. Tompkins
to declare the election of Cantain McKinney
void on the ground of illegal voting.
Woman's Benevolent Association Concert.
At a concert in Turner hall last night under
the auspices of the Woman’s Benevolent asso-
ciation to obtain funds tor the proposed Home
for Fallen Women Professor A. J. H. Bar-
bour acted as musical din-ctor and aceompa-
niest and Miss Marie Lacoste Madame Favre
Mrs. F. Hertf. Signor Carlo Lamoni Mr. W. B.
Sterling. Mr. Ferdinand Lacoste ami Mr. E. E.
IA-ach took part.
During an interval Mrs. Ostrom read an able
paper on Hie work of the association.
At tiie close of the concert Messrs. Everett
and Sterling proprietors of the Alamo Music
House entertained the ladies
who had contributed to the entertainment
and other friends at the Novelty restaurant
on Alamo plaza to which place they were con-
veyed by a special car.
A meeting of the Woman’s Benevolent asso-
ciation will be held on Friday March’d at
3:30 p. m. in the ladies parlor of the Vance
hotel at which time all persons haying r"-
eeived concert tickets for sale or distribution
will make returns.
-Justice Adams united Willis Runnels to
Maria Harris yesterday.
— The agent for property of Mra. P. H.Groes-
beck will please call at the Light office.
The barometer to day indicates good
weather. The index wavers between tail and
set fair. •
—Mrs. Barbetta Spitzer late of Dallas
mother of Mra. M. Friedman died yesterday
afternoon.
-Mrs. Sarah Johnson has tiled a suit in the
District court for divorce from her husband
Henry Johnson.
—A partv of young San Antonians were out
last night’ as an Italian string band and sere-
naded several belles in the Third ward.
—To-day there are 14 prisoners in the city
Jail. Yesterday there were 29. Most ot the
prisoners now sentenced are employed on street
mprovement.
—Mrs Charles Benton is expected tearrivein
a few days to form a large company of chil-
dren toplay in the juvenile opera of Cinderella
during Easter week.
There is a young lady in San Antonio who
carries a silver satchel “presented from La-
redo’’ whose apliearace causes considerable ag-
itation in the breast of a city spark.
— Dr. A. J. Smith of Commerce street has
purchased land on the slope of the hill in the
first district east of the San Antonio river on
which he intends to erect a family residence.
— Invitations are out for the marriage of
Miss Fannie Rouff and Mr. Julius Oppenheimer
of this city which is to be celebrated at the res-
idence of Mrs. K. Rouff at Victoria Texas on
.'.larch 7.
—The death of John Bourgeois a French-
nan aged 49 years occurred on North Flores
itreet yesterday afternoon. He had been in
he city’ 4s years. His remains will be buried
his afternoon.
The old suit of Smith and Redmond vs.
French Whiteeotton on sworn account for
$31.25 was decided to-day in Justice Adam’s
court by Judgment being given to the plaintiff.
Notice of appeal was given. •
Mr. Jacob E. Groos. of Chicago died in the
ITiird ward yesterday ol heart disease in the
!7th year of his age. His remains have been
jlaceil in a tine metallic casket by Undertaker
Philip Dei ami will be shippedthis afternoon to
"hicago. They will be accompanied by the
mother and the sister of the deceased.

cago and his business partner Major A. C
Schryver of this city started for Eagle Pass
last evening. At Eagle Pass Junction they
are to be joined by Mrs. Sch'yver and Mrs.
Martin who will leave here this evening.
From there Mr. and Mrs. Martin go to El
Paso and Chihuahua and Mr. and Mrs.
Schryver return to this city. While here Mr.
Martin expressed himself as pleased with the
many evidences of the rapid growth of the city
and for it a great future. ‘‘San An-
tonio” said ne “is to be the pivotal point in
the commercial intercourse of Mexico and the
United States. In a few years from now
a great part of the Mexican trade
will be controlled by San Antonio merchants.
The mineral resources of the tributary districts
will also have some influence on the advance-
ment of the city. As for railroads they have
already worked wonders here but their work
has not yet been ended. Owing to its advant-
ageous situation San Antonio will in time
become the central point of a great railway
system the branches of which will take in
entire Northern and Central America.”
