The appointment of Paul Fricke as
marshal of western Texas does not
seem to please the democratic press of
the state. It is just possible Presi-
dent Harrison was not thinking much
about the partisan democracy when
he made the appointment.
The democracy of Texas in general
and the democratic press in particular
seem quite exercised over the slow-
ness of President Harrison to turn
democrats out of office in Texas and
fill their places with good republi-
cans. The Waco Day said last
Thursday:
The Texas republicans are slow in
getting in their work on the new ad-
ministration. President Harrison has
as yet made only one appointment in
the state and that to fill a vacancy
caused by resignation nor has any
Texan got a foreign or domestic plum
worth the having.

HARRY MAYNARD’S 808.
BY CARRIE MAYNARD.
Bob you are a graceful creature
Both in form and every feature;
Your shaggy tail as you wag it to and
fro.
Makes you the boss where e’re you go.
You seem to say: “Boys ah there!
And of me you want to beware
For I am Harry Maynard’s Bob;
He loves me and he spares the rod.
“He is my boxing master
And he I’must look after;
’Though no matches for me does he
make
And if so I would surely get a steak.
“On that Harry is known to be square
So to him I will act honest and fair;
Harry sometimes likes to roam
And if he’s full I’ll take him home.
“I’ll let no harm befall him then
For drinking is the fault of the best
of men;
I’ll stick to him until I die
But if he goes first on his grave let
me lie.”
Bob is Mr. Maynard’s beautiful St.
Bernard dog now in this city. He is a
faithful fellow and Harry says he has
often acted the part of a friend as re-
lated in the fourth stanza.
