The Alamo monument association
cannot find the man it is looking for
by advertising. Men of the calibre
necessary to fill that bill are not an-
swering advertisements.
The question of a national bank-
rupt law which has so often been
brought up m congress and as often
defeated has again come to the front.
Its necessity is felt in commercial
circles and eastern merchants and
manufacturers are agitating the sub-
juct in order to have it once more en-
gage national attention.
Purvis Marion county Miss. is
the center of attraction this week.
For the second time the hitherto un-
known soil of Marion county has be-
come the Mecca toward which the
slugger pilgrims turn their eyes ex-
pectantly. John has been indicted
and Jake is com ng down to eat out of
the same bowl ot soup.
Some little consternation has been
caused in yellow fever districts by the
announcement made in a letter of ex-
mayor of Pensacola that smugglers
and coasters are continually landing
on the coast of lower Florida direct
from Cuba and other fever infected
islands and that proper
steps are taken to prevent this inter-
course yellow fever may be planted
at any time. Very little effort on the
part of the government would be
needed to stamp out this trade and
prevent the consequences that are so
likely to follow if this intercourse is
not stopped. These smugglers and
coasters are filthy many of them and
the very best means possible of spread-
ing the germs of yellow fever.
One more act in the Sarah-Althea-
Hill tragedy. This time it is her
husband Judge Terry who comes to
grief siiot to death by United States
Marshall Nagle tor slapping the face
of Justice Field ot the United States
supreme court who had committed
him to jail lor contempt of court dur-
ing the suit of his wife against the
Sharon estate. The shooting on the
part of Nagle seems utterly unjustifi-
able as he was not attacked nor does
the latest account of the transaction
show that Judge Field was in any
danger of serious injury. Whatever
m»y htve been entertained by
Mashal Na de concerning the out-
come of Terry's insult he was entire-
ly too pre\ious with his pistol ami
will probably pay ths penalty of his
recklessness. The evident prejudice I
existing against Judge Terry and his
wile will no doubt do much to pave I
the way for a light sentence in his |
case but it was murder no more no I
less and all Ilie more reprehensible
for being committed by an officer of
justice It looks very much like a
memedit»ted affair so quickly was
Nagle’s pistol brought into use.
Mrs. Maybrick will very likely
hang. There are two reasons for
this: First—her husband was an
arsinic eater fir years and evident
traces of arsenic were found in his
system: Sacond—she had been guil-
ty of an infidelity to her husband
which she had confessed and which
he hadj forgiven. For these offences
she is to hang in the land of law and
superior virtue. There is no evidence
that she poisoned her husband; only
evidence that poison was there and
she being a woman who had sinned
naturally administered it. This was
the reasoning of the astute judge
this the conclusion of the stupid jury.
The export statistics of this coun-
try for the nine months ending
July 31st show a very marked in-
crease of exports in beef pork and
dairy products over corresponding
nine months ending with July 31st
1888. This certainly does not show
any diminution of resources on the
part of the United States. Our gold
and silver and beef and pork and
dairy products are in excess of those
of previous years and when the
wheat oats corn and cotton crops
are rounded up and the results for-
mulated into comparative statistics it
wiil be seen that this country is on
the highway of prosperity. The
tens of thousands of Americans trav-
elling in Europe this year and the
immense amounts of gold drawn over
the ocean to meet payments on Amer-
ican stocks and bonds has tempora-
rily drained our gold supply and
alarmed the pessimists but there is
no cause for uneasiness. The coun-
try is in a highly prosperous condi-
tion.
lowa lias nominated her next gov-
ernor. It was done by the republican
party in the Des Moines convention
and the honor fell upon Joseph G.
Hutchinson of Ottumwa. The plat-
form adopted is clear and comprehen-
sive. It endorses of course the pres-
ent administration all good republi-
cans do that; favors a liberal con-
struction of tlie pension laws ; favors
protection but not trusts and monop-
olies which it is the duty of both
state and nation to suppress; endorses
railway regulation state and na-
tional ; welcomes the new states into
the union and pronounces in favor of
arbitration in the settlement of wage
differences. lowa will elect the nom-
inee of ths convention.
The Express of this morning gets
down to solid business on the action
of the San Antonio and International
fair and places the blame for the
failure to hold a Fair this fall just
where the Light placed it yesterday
at the door of tlie common council of
San Antonio. In departing from its
usual course and coming out in this
plain and unmistakable maimer the
Express does itself credit.
The attempt to bolster»up a case for
Marshal Nagle by the assertion that
Judge Terry had a knife and that his
wife took it out of his hand when she
tiirew herself upon his murdered
body is too transparant. There is not
a scrap of evidence to show that this
was the case or that Terry had a
knife in his possession. So far as any
details of the matter have been mabe
public Marshal Nagle stands convicted
of a cowardly murder in which his
victim who had not assaulted him
was not given a ghost of a chance for
his lite. Other testimony may be
forthcoming to show that Terry was
armed and intended to make a deadly
assault upon Judge Field but as at
present presented the facts indicate
that Terry intended to put a public
attront upon Judge Field for refusing
him any clemency after sentencing
him to six months imprisonment for
contempt of court in defending his
wife when under very great nervous
excitement she outraged the. proprie-
ties ot the court room in which Judge
Field presided.
The contest still goes on for the
location of the world’s fair. St. Louis
and New York are the bidders out-
side of Washington. While the south
and south west would favor St. Louis
as against New York the proper place
to hold that quadri-centennial is at
the national capital. It will very
probably be held there.

Merits of Southern Women.
Sunny South !
Northern people have always had a
good many queer notions about their
cousins down this way and the
queerest of all is the notion that the
Southern women are not practical.
On the contrary the women of the
South take to business as naturally
as a duck does to water. They have
not the tendency to isms that the fair
Northerners boast of. thank the Lord.
Their way is to take things as they
find f hem ami make the best of the
situation. Without the least ap-
pearence of effort or sounding ot tom-
toms they go quietly about paying
their own way and their failures are
too few to talk about. It was noth-
ing uncommon in old times to see a
woman riding about in the fields
bossing the negroes and the overseer.
She usually supplemented this care
on her own account with a general su-
pervision of the country side and her
masculine neighbors were only too
glad to consult her on matters ot com-
mon interest. Many a debt-burden-
ed estate has been freed by the femi-
nine turn for detail a faculty that
too many planters lacked before and
since the war.
