BE FAIR! FAIR OR NO FAIR.
How the Express Reporters Hit
Under the Belt
In the local columns of this morn
ing's Express under the caption
“Fair or no Fair” occurs this sen-
tence:
“The presidents of the Crosstown
and of the Han Antonio Land and
Improvement company each object to
statements ascribed to them by even-
ing papers.”
By the term “evening papers” it is
fair to surmise that the Light is in-
cluded. This statement ot the Ex-
press so far as the Light is con-
cerned is false unjust to this journal
is calculated to mislead and is here-
by branded as such and as having
no foundation in fact. The president
of the San Antonio Land and Im-
provement company stands by every
word that the Light has said con-
cerning the attitude of that company
to the matter of transportation to the
state fair. The Light has said that
the San Antonio Land and Improve-
ment company were ready to bond
themselves to build to the Fair
ground by November -sth or to step
aside ana give any other company
the field provided such other com-
pany would enter into bond to build
to the fair ground and equip the road
to accommodate the travel during
the continuance of the Fair and
the Light has not ascribed oth-
er statements to that company
To say that the president of the Land
and Improvement company objects to
this statement is not true and the Ex-
press has no ground for so stating.
As to the president of the Cross town
rail-road will the Express or the pres-
ident of the Cross town road show
where the Light has ever professed
to speak for the presidentof that road
or has published anything as coming
from him? The Light puts itself on
the record. The Light did say “The
Cross town people will build to the
fair ground but not this fall.” It
said this not because of any reported
conversation witli the president of
that road but because the petition for
franchise plainly stated that they
would build to the fair ground within
twelve months of securing their right
of way. It was the otlicial document
before the council that said they
would not reach the fair ground this
fall not the Light.
The Express farther says: “Mr.
Lewis states that he never said that
the Cross town could not build to the
Fair grounds by November 1 but
that they can and will do so under
bond.”
The president of the Han Antonio
International Fair and Exposition as-
sociation is the Light’s authority for
slating that Mr. Lewis said the Cross
town folks would do their best to
reach the fair grounds this fall but
would not enter into any bonds to do
so.
In view of these facts the Light re-
sents as unjust unjustifiable and un-
warranted by fact the assertion made
in the Express this morning in so far
as those expressions refer to and in-
clude this journal. It does not pro-
pose to be charged with bogus inter-
views nor made responsible for what
it has not said but it is ready to meet
the full consequences of its own state-
ments and simply asks to be judged
by what itself has said and not by
what it is falsely reported as saying.

Candidate Campbell interviews to
a New York World reporter to the
effect that “I think in the long run
we will gain by advocating tariff re-
form.” But the “long run” that Mr.
Campbelt refers to Is so very long
that it don’t even begin this year.
“The fact remains however” says
Mr. Campbell “that the Democrats
have never been able to carry Ohio
on a national issue and I do not
think that this is a good time to try.”
But the Neaities say that it is pol-
itical suicide to try anything else.
All of which goes to show that the
Democrats are “getting together”
handsomely in a harmony spelled
with an H as big as the Brooklyn
bridge.
