MEXICO DAY.
FANNIE SHEAR YOUNG LONGVIEW
TEXAS.
Of all the days of all the Fair
To me was none half-way so rare
As that on which we took the baud
Of Mexico our sister land.
Proud Mexico ne’er land had pleading
8o full of truth and eloquence.
Or representative so leading
In thought with power so silv’ry
intense. *
With culture’s own gentility
And love of his land wesu in his
tone
He thrilled all heart’s fidelity
Inspiring: and th’ feeling won
From hearts in hearts found biding-
place
Ana made the oond that binds two
lands.
(Methought the cavalier’s true race
Still thrives on far Pacific strands.)
To better build our interest we
Must foster our sister’s to*.
For where is magnanimity
Whose gathering hand doth never
strew?
If Mexico’s vast fields of treasure
Be made to blossom as the rose.
Enhanced her neighbor’s are in
measure
As their relationship is close.
The strong grudge not to others
strength.
The proud incite not force convic-
tion.
We’d see thee Mexico at length.
In statehood full our own reflection.
Your dark-eyed sons and star-eyed
daughters
Well grace the halls of learning and
As mind meets mind ’twill not be
thought ours
Attainment’s sole abiding-land.
First Grade at Sixty.

“What are you doing with those
books auntie?”
The remark was addressed to an
aged negress who was climbing the
hill in the direction of Spelman .Semi-
nary yesterday afternoon with a
slate and a lot of school books under
her arm.
“Gwine to school chile.”
“To school at your age?"
“O I ain’t quite 60 yet” she said
her eyes twinkling through a pair ot
steelrimmed glasses and her gray
hair clustering about her wrinkled
brow in a regular Uncle Remus look-
ing ma iner.
“Are you learning anything?”
“O yes I’s git ten’ de hang er dese
books right erlong. W’y w’eu I
started ter de school I didn’t know
nary letter but now since I been
gwine ter dat lady up dar I’s done
got so I kin put dese letters tergedder
des as cute. But I mus’ keep erpod-
gin’ ca’se der bell rung an’ I’ll be
tardy and git er black ma’k I 'specs
Saying this the lady trudged on
up the hill like any school girl. Evan
at her advanced age she is deter-
mined to get an education.

The Elder Was More Cautious.
F • the Lewiston Journal.
It was Elder Buzzell who called on
a worthy deacon *o open a meeting
with prayer and was surprised when
the good man began his petition with:
“O thou great insignificant God ’’
“Omnipotent brother; you mean
omnipotent God” whispered »he hor-
rified pastor.
“Huh!” ejaculated the surprised
supplicant. “What’s that you say?"
The preacher repeated the correc-
tion whereupon thedeacon continued
h.s prayer to a great length and con-
cluded as follows:
“Finally Ij»rd bless our edicated
parson. Biuffhlm with religion as
well as with words; break him ot the
habit of fault fiiidin’ it possible and
at the ’leventh hour gather him with
the saints in thy kingdom.”
Elder Buzzell who was fond of tell-
ing the story always ended by de-
claring that it was the first and last
attempt at correcting the speech of
his brethren.

It Was Raining
Detroit Free Press.
Yesterday afternoon while the rain
was pouring down a citizen left the
Postoffice to encounter an acquaint-
ance who was also* sheltered by an
umbrella.
“Raining isn’tit?”queried the first.
“Hey?”
“Raining isn’t i’?”
“I’d like to see you a moment” was
th■» reply. “Come upstairs.”
The two passed up traversed the
dark hall tt> its darkest corner and
then No. 2 turned on No 1 with:
“Do you take me for an infernal
idiot?”
“Wny no of course not.”
“Do you suppose I’m carrying an
umbrella around to keep the sun ot! at
this time of year?”
“No.”
“I’m carrying it to keep the rain oft
am I not?”
“Of course.”
“Weil then it rains. You know it
rains. Everybody in town knows it
rains. Now you go on and let people
alone.”
“ But—but —”
“That’s all. You let it rain. She
knows her business. You just attend
to your own affairs and let the weath-
er alone. Good day sir ”
And he went clumping down stairs
and left the other to follow at his
leisure.
