THE REMEDY
DEAR LEO:
Wdnesday next Judge R. E. Seagler speaker of the House
of Representatives will be guest of honor and address the club
his text being "THE LEGISLATURE AND THE REMEDY."
Judge Seagler graduated from Texas University class of
1912. He was at the head of his class during the freshman
year but gravitated toward the foot after discovering they
taught the same at either end. He was president of the Stu-
dents’ Association 1911 and 1912; served three terms in the
Legislature and practised law in Palestine until recently when
he located in San Antonio as a member of the firm of Strickland
& Seagler.
Diplomacy made him speaker. He is possessed of the sort
that remembers a woman's birthday but forgets her age. When
he left Palestine the local newspaper expressed its regrets and
published the news item under the head of "Public Improve-
ments" probably having San Antonio in mind. As a speaker
he is the big roquefort. He may not be the quid nunc of the
Legislature but he certainly is a quorum. It takes some pull
to be a speaker—Magnus Johnson says you get it milking cows.
The confidence and affectionate regard of his clients is
illustrated in the following yarn: It is said the Judge success-
fully defended a Palestine client in a trespass case and the
plaintiff was sore from the Judge’s grilling. When leaving the
courtroom he sought out the defendant shook his fist under his
nose and said: "Dern yer hide. I’ll law you to the Circuit
Court.’’ “Do it!" invited the winner “I’ll be thar!” “An’ I’ll
law you to the Supreme Court!” savagely shouted the losing
end. “Go ahead I’ll be thar!” “An’ if I don’t get you in the
Supreme Court I’ll law you to hell!” The Judge’s client
snapped right back “Do it you’ll find my attorney right thar!”
Our legislators are sincere and possess average intelligence
but charaster may be the remedy. Character is the rock against
which the sea of circumstances f beats in vain; against it the ele-
ments marshal their troops—wind and wave fire and eartquake
—all in vain.
Perhaps the world has no need so great as to recognize the
inviolate and inviolable worth of character. There is no more
urgent demand upon the present race of men than cultivation
and development of character in order to reap its fruitage in
personal and community life.
