The Girl Who Loved
— /(r May Christie —
Luella nnd we never hit it off. She'd
nn nmbitions. Couln’t rise with me.
She hated change and travel. I—J
sort of grew away from her.”
I.uella could well believe it.
He went on :
“I never treated her badly in the
money sense. She was welcome to
all I had except—except my company.
I—l got so sick and tired of my mar-
riage. Luella. I haven’t lived with
hei in years and years.”
His listener began to feel a little
mollified.
“If you’ll only let me keep your
friendship?’* He was humble plvml-
• ing. almost abject. “I’d be—so proud
—and honored. And if 1 can help in
a financial way. oh. you can count on
me Luella!’* Then- were actually
tears in his eyes as he mnde this offer.
She was touched. The thought of
money always touched her if the truth
be told.
CHAPTER 34.
The Island of Delight.
They sailed away that evening Lu-
ella and her aunt and Mary Forrest
with Cyrus Wade.
The actress made herself agreeable
to the secretary girl. She couldn’t dis-
cuss the affair further with the older
folk—and Mary Forrest was really
kind ami sympathetic.
“Not half so narrow-minded as you
used to be.” volunteered Luella.
It was high praise indeed. Her
hearer gave an awry little smile.
The boat approached Miami. Some-
how the Florida coast seemed to have
lost some of its fascination to the eyes
of Mary Forrest. Was it because
Philip Andover was not there?
But he was coming on to Cuba
wasn’t he?
The train journey to Key Wi*t was
uneventful. Except for the ever-chang-
ing colors of the sea the scenery was
flat monotonous.
That evening the party boarded the
Havana boat. Moonlight was flooding
everything and before turning in for
the night Mary Forrest slipped alone
on deck to drcam a little. . . .
Romance! How sweet it was! Even
at this moment under the same rn-
chantiug moon was Philip thinking ot
her missing her as she missed him?
<>r were all men changeable and
fickle? Could one really truat them
after all?
iiurr ui i :
The cxpiisure of John Rogers* mar
riago had astounded Mary Forrest. It
had been almost as great a shock to
her as to Luella. She felt Rorrj for
Luella. Without a permanent love
one had do anchor had one? Her own
happiness was so great so utterly en-
compassing. that she feared for it.
“If anything should happen between
Philip ami myself. . . !** The thought
sent little shivers through her heart.
His words his endearments were
treasures she had stored within her
memory. Now in this secluded cor-
ner of the moonlit deck she brought
them out. just like a miser’s board.
In every sentence every phrase
there had been no definite tnarriage-
offor. He had talked at times nbou*
their future hadn’t he? Oh yes! But
vaguely. . . .
A twinge of pain of fear caught
BAREFOOT BURGLAR
RATO. A. HOME
Del Rio’s barefoot burglar made 1
his initial appearance in San Antonio
early Monday ami succ<p<le<l in es-
caping with hx»t valued at several
thousand dollars from the resi'bnce
of Mrs. David Levy 1007 San Pedro
avenue.
Distinct tracks of bare feet in the
soft earth wh»n the burglar cut a
screen and gained admission to the
h<uise were fonn<l by City Detectives
Proudf<M»t and Stcndebach who in- i
veetiguted the case.
Similar tracks were found by po-
lice after an unsuccessful attempt to
l'M>t a residence at 510 West Laurel
street Sunday night. The attempt
was frustrateil by Mrs. E. H. Fuz-
zell who discovered the burglar.
In the ransacking of the Levy
home the burglar worked while the
occupant* slept. Early inventory <4
the loot obtained im-ludwl $77 in rash
a diamond set necklace ojx-ra glasses
a larg«- amount of valuable silverware
and other articles.

hold of her. She tried to throw it off.
How wrong not to trust him utterly I
But Luella had believed in Rogers
hadn't she? He’d talked of marriage
and of honeymoons. Only this after-
noon Luclln rather haltingly had
confided the whole tale to her.
Of course Philip was an infinitely
finer man. But
That recital of Rogers’ perfidy had
shaken her a little.
"Dreaming in the moonlight huh?’
Luella came and stood beside her
with an attempt at camaraderie.
"We're in the same cabin yuu and 1.
nnd it’s going to be as hot as Hades.
Let's not hurry down.”
The girl looked restless almost
wan.
“Can she really be in love with
Rogers?" Mary wondered.
Luella lit a cigarette.
“A queer thing life.” Her voice
was non-committal. “Best not to feel
anything too much my dear. The
woman always gets the worst of it.”
Again that little pang through Mary
Forrest’s heart. Luella of course
was cynical and worldly.
Bnt one heard those trite phrases
so # often that one wondered if there
mustn’t be something in them after
“How goes it with Phillip Andover?
Quite a case between the two of you.
aunt tells me.”
Mary forced herself to answer rli a
voice that sounded almost careless: !
“Oh. we saw a gooil deal of each
other. He's a pleasant friend.”
Luella sh<£ her a shrewd look. She
had a certain measure of acumen. I
"You’re not in love with him?’’
Mary was thankful that the silvtrv :
moonlight hid her flush.
“What a funny <piestion!”
Luella puffed at her cigarette. Then
she asked another.
“Has he proposed?”
“Er—why do you ask?”
“Don’t fence. I take it that h*
hasn't or you would have told me."
Then as though ruminating: "If h“
only had better prospects I bcliev?
I’d take him on again." She mldcd
with a half-apologetic laugh: “That *
to say. if you haven’t stormed *is
heart already.”
Mary was rather glad when the.
went down below. But even in th-
cabin Lmdla’s talk continued. The
girl had been thoroughly shaken b\ i
the revelation of John Kogers’ mar-
riage—and there were many things
that she poured out to her companion
‘’You can’t trust any of them furi’i
er than you can see them. So don’t |
get carried away my child by prutQ-
ises and plans. They’re nil alike. A .
selfish an they make 'em. Believe me. I
no man is worth a heartache.’*
Mary at last slept fitfully.
She was roused shortly after day-
break and went upon deck again.
From a sapphire sea rose Cuba in |
its silver greenness. A dense mass of i
dark and glossy leaves were shimmer- I
ing on the slopes.
