SPECIAL TO THE SEALY NEWS
While areas of Texas were
blessed with rain and cooler
temperatures in the last
couple of weeks, the precip-
itation did not relieve the
drought that covers most of
the state.
“The rain ... provided
temporary relief in parts of
Texas, but we are still con-
cerned about the upcoming
summer fire season,” said
Tom Spencer, Texas Forest
Service risk assessment
coordinator. “The vegeta-
tion will quickly dry out
once temperatures are
back up to normal.”
Spencer said the weather
pattern across the state is
very similar to 1998 — the
last El Nino year, when
10,684 . fires burned
422,939 acres in Texas in a
fire season that lasted
from May 1 to Oct. 31.
“So far this year, a good
part of the state has
received only 50 percent of
its normal precipitation,”
Spencer said. “We also
have lower than normal
fuel (vegetation) moisture,
which means we’re not in
good shape to be heading
into the summer drying
period. It won’t take long
to reach critical fire danger
levels.”
Paul Witsaman, regional
aviation and fire meteorol-
ogist with the National
Weather Service in Fort
Worth, agreed that Texas
needed a significant rain
event before heading into
the summer months.
“The projections are that
June will be drier and
warmer than normal, with

Before setting out to
enjoy the sunny days, keep
the following tips in mind:
• Before building a

are no outdoor burning

open, level spots away
from trees and overhang-

extinguish campfires with
water.
• When cooking out-

• Check wheel bearings,
tires and tow chains on
' recreational and boat trail-

been used for a while often
need . wheel bearings
repacked to keep them
from locking up and throw
sparks. Towing a trailer
with a flat tire can start
several roadside fires
before the driver realizes
there is a problem.
Dragging tow chains can
also ignite fires.
• Make sure spark
arrestors are properly
functioning on all-terrain
vehicles, agricultural
equipment, chain saws and
other internal combustion
engines.
• Use an ashtray when
smoking in a vehicle.
When smoking outdoors,
stay in areas free of dry
vegetation and safely dis-
pose of cigarette butts.
