taught that headstones shouldn’t be
called tombstones, but memorials. She
started photographing memorials in
various cemeteries and put the photos
on slides, which she presented to the
society, including some interesting
facts.
First, she discussed the materials
used for tombstones, which were wood,
sandstone, concrete and granite.

President Laura Schumann presided
at the meeting, Vice President Merline
Mayfield led the Pledge of Allegiance,
Secretary Evelyn Kieke read the min-
utes and Treasurer Gene Remmert gave
the treasurer’s report. Carrie Froebel
gave an update on the T-shirt project.
The president expressed thanks to
all the members who helped in any
way at the Fruehling Saengerfest in
April and reported on all facets of the
monetary results at the festival. The
Lions Club suggested changes in dates
and places as possibilities for future
festivals, but the consensus of the
members was that it should be kept at
Concordia Hall as a spring affair.
A complimentary letter from Verna
Nell and Leon Dittmer Jr. was read. It
was about the wonderful day the
Saengerfest was for them and to all
who attended.
Remmert reported Gilbert and
Jeanette Kollatschny and Charles and
Rita Powell signed up as members of
the chapter at the Saengerfest, and at
the meeting Wick and Kim Beane,
Robert and Joyce Bullard and Grace
Holtkamp joined, bringing the chap-
ter’s total membership to 60.
The next meeting will be July 16,
when an ice cream social will be fea-
tured and members will share a “get
acquainted” night.
“Du, Du, Liegst Mir Im Herzen” was
again sung for the closing, after which
cake and coffee were enjoyed by all.
Sealy-area residents —
including children — are
welcome.
'Cookies, punch and coffee
will be served.
