instead of going to that
study hall like he was sup-
posed to, Dan said.
When the school secre-
tary called up his house to
ask his parents where he
might be, who should
answer the phone? You
guessed it.
“He just wasn’t thinking,
I guess,” Kulow said, smil-
ing broadly. But smiles soon
fade whenever his thoughts
turn to Kevin.
“I’ve lived here most of my
life, and I got to see my boys
grow up and become good
people with good families,”
Mr. Kulow said. “I’m glad I
got to see them grow up and
accomplish that, but what I
wouldn’t give for just one
more minute with Kevin.”

EASY RIDER:
| Your life will be greatly simplified
I if your pet is a good traveler.
| Frequent short trips with your pup or
| kitten will get it used to riding in the
| car it is much less likely to get car-
I sick on a long trip if you withhold
| food and water before you leave
I Take a supply of your own food and
4 water to avoid stomach upsets Give
s small amounts of water through the
I day; save the meal for the night stop.
I Keep your pet on a leash so that if
I you stop and open the door it can't
jump out and escape in a strange
place Never leave your pet in a car!
The temperature inside can reach
150 degrees in 5 minutes on a warm
day Be sure that your pet's vaccina-
tions are current. A health certificate
from your vet is necessary if you're
crossing state lines. Remember -
your pel depends on you .

al service in Colorado pro-
vides to the crowds that
gather there each year, a
sense of brotherhood among
others in similar situations,
all dealing with the same
hurts families touched by
the loss of a fireman know
all too well.
And yet despite the pains
of loss, both Dan Kulow and
Kevin’s brother Keith still
follow in his footsteps, serv-
ing as firefighting volun-
teers with the Sealy VFD.
Unlike Dan and Kevin’s
wife and sons, Keith didn’t
get the chance to attend his
brother’s service. The fund-
raining efforts for the trip
only covered immediate
family members, something
Dan lamented in his recol-
lection of the event.
Still, Kulow’s group from
Houston, Sealy and the sur-
rounding area was easily one
of the largest in attendance.
The service was indeed
something to behold, the
elder Kulow said. Families
of the deceased - 106 of
them this year - were pre-
sented flags by their
departmental leadership,
complete with all the cere-
monials of bagpipes and
drum roles for the departed.
The flag bearers alone
outnumbered the Sealy
High School Band, Kulow
said, adding, “That really
says a lot as to the number
of people we lost this year.”
One of the highlights of the
trip was taking part in the
parade through Colorado
Springs, Kulow said. He and
grandson Kyle, who attended
that day in honor of his dad
Kevin, got to ride atop a fire
truck in the nearly mile-long
procession, followed close
behind by his brother Justin,
who watched the parade
from the back of a motorcy-
cle, riding with a group called
the “Fire Wings” who rallied
from Houston to Colorado for
the event.
Unlike what most would
expect from a parade, this
one wasted no time getting
where it was going, Dan
Kulow said.
“It took everything we
had to hold on,” he said.
And despite being in a
completely different climate
than he was accustomed,
Dan says it was surprising-
ly warm through the dura-
tion of the event, leaving
most attendees clamoring
for the shade of the few
trees in the area.
“It was a beautiful ser-
vice, even if it was hot,” he
remarked. “And I can’t
thank everyone enough who
came out to support my
family.”
Dozens came from the
Houston Fire Department,
including his captain and
several close friends. Joey
and Donna Schmidt from
Sealy also made the trip.
“Kevin is really missed by
his parents, his sons, his
wife, his friends and his fel-
low firefighters,” Dan
Kulow said. “But we know
Kevin is with us, looking
down on us all.”
With the sadness, though,
also come the fond remem-
brances of his boy.
“Kevin was a good kid,”
his father sad. “He only got

Chamber
week starts
on Monday
Oct. 11-15 is Chamber of
Commerce Week in Texas.
During this week, all of the
citizens of the county should
pause and reflect on the
many contributions made to
our communities through
the efforts of our local
Chambers of Commerce.
The Chambers of
Commerce improves your
community by creating jobs,
implementing beautifica-
tion programs, improving
education, campaigning for
improved streets and high-
ways, and stimulating
industrial, commercial, and
agricultural growth.
Through the guidance of
outstanding business lead-
ers, there is a long history of
accomplishment in our
county that is the result of
the support and involve-
ment of the Chambers.
Let’s express our appreci-
ation through a simple
thank you to the leaders,
volunteers, and staff of your
local chambers.
