cookie as an ornament. Now all
these cultures including the Ameri-
cans change the cookie with the
season bringing forth new varieties
in celebration of the different
holidays. The Dutch even have a
cookie that is called "allerhande,"
meaning a little bit of everything
because it can be varied according
to the occasion.
Now I have a file on cookies that is
about three inches thick Few
recipes are alike. Here is one of my
favorites and one of the winners in
the Lee-Burleson Pecan Bake Show:

IRS has undelivered
refund checks
The Internal Revenue Service is
looking for Austin area residents
whose refund checks were returned
as Undeliverable by the Postal
Service last year.
Approximately 275 refunds remain
unclimed by Austin area residents,
the IRS said. The largest unclaimed
check is 14,329 34; the smallest is $1.
When refunds are returned by the
Postal Service, the IRS attempts to
find the taxpayer and deliver the
checks, but there are always some
who cannot be found.
Taxpayers may have moved or
changed their last names during the
year and failed to notify the IRS.
Sometimes the handwriting on tax
returns is hard to read The best way
to avoid misdirected refunds checks
is to use the peel-off label found in
the tax package, making any
changes right on the label.
Taxpayers who were expecting a
refund and have moved or changed
their names during the year are
encouraged to call the IRS at 1, 800,
829-1040.

My favorite part of the holidays is
the cookies. I love cookies. I love to
bake them and I love to eat them.
Americans adapted the word
"cookie” from the Dutch language
and the word "koekje." We certainly
share their passion for these small,
sweet morsels. This passion dates
back three centuries to the time
when New York, New Jersey, and
Delaware and parts of Pennsylvania
were settled by the Dutch. In fact,
that area from 1609 to 1664 was
known as New Netherland. The area
was a big trade center where
Indians came to trade for furs, metal
pots, blankets, cloth and wampum;
however, baked goods were also a
form of currency There are even
some records to indicate that there
were fines for trading baked goods
with the Indians in times of grain
scarcity.
The Dutch are not the only culture
with great fondness for cookies The
English cookies are a must at tea
times and for desserts. In Mexico the
tiny sugar cookies topped with
colored candies are everywhere in
the markets at Easter and
Chrismtas time. The Germans even
introduced the cookie to the
Christmas tree by hanging the
