Lower Colorado River Authority
directors have decided to close a
Bastrop County lignite mine after its
permit expires in 1993.
In addition, another permit to
expand the Powell Bend mine won't
be sought, at the urging of LCRA
General Manager Mark Rose.
The mine had been providing
about 4 percent of the LCRA’s fuel
needs to general electricity. LCRA
sells power over a 41-county area of
Central Texas, including to the City
of Giddings and Lexington, and the
Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative.
About 200.000 tons of lignite are
being taken from the mine annually
as a partial fuel source for the
Fayette Power Project near
LaGrange.
LCRA staffers spent about eight
months reviewing whether the mine
should be expanded before returning
with a recommendation that it be
closed and no permit sought to
expand it.
That report showed that both
western coal and even natural gas
are competitive with the cost of
lignite from the Powell Bend mine,
which is being used as a partial fuel
at the Fayette Power Project near
LaGrange.
LCRA directors voted 10-2 in favor
of closing the mine.
Economics showed that in
comparison to coal imported from
western states, Powell Bend lignite
"would not be a moneymaker,’’ said
LCRA spokesman Robert Cullick.
"Compared to western coal, the last
10 years it would be ”
But there is currently "over-
production” of western coal and
natural gas, Cullick added
In 1988, LCRA directors approved
expansion of the Powell Bend mine
rather than developing another mine
in Fayette County.
But upon reconsideration, the
board changed its mind, Cullick
said.
