Sixty minutes is all it takes to treat
kidney stones with lithotripsy. You can
expect to go home the same day and
resume normal activities the next day.
Sixty minutes or six weeks. If you had a choice, which would you rather sacrifice to
get over a kidney stone problem?

Don’t expect your newborn to look
like the round, pink babies born on
TV. Producers usually cast babies who
are really several weeks or months old
for these parts. The truth is, the typical
newborn is startlingly odd-looking.
When you think about it, it’s no
wonder that our offspring don't pop
out of the womb looking like cherubs;
after all, not only do they have to
adjust to a dramatic change of envir-
onment. but they go through signifi-
cant trauma getting out into these new
surroundings.
One of the first things that many
parents notice is the peculiar shape of
their new baby’s head. During the
birth process, the skull often becomes
molded to fit through the birth canal,
giving it a "conehead" appearance.
Although this may be shocking if you
are not expecting it. this elongation is
quite normal and will gradually dimin-
ish within a week The head may also
seem to be large compared to the rest
of the body. This is nothing to worry
about. As your baby grows, the body
will quickly catch up.
The skin tone and texture of new-
borns also are startling You won’t see
soft, pink baby skin at first. Most
babies arrive with a greasy, whitish

coating called vernix, an extra layer to
protect the baby in the womb Under-
neath this, infants often have blotchy-
colored skin it is dry and thin and
usually veins are visible. Some babies
have downy hair covering their trunks.
This is usually shed by the end of the
first week Many are born with pig-
mented spots, rashes, and even pim-
ples, but these blemishes are almost
always temporary.
Another feature of most newborns
that parents often find unusual is their
swollen genitals This is common for
both sexes, although the scrotum of
baby boys may seem especially large
compared to their small size.
Often grandparents, aunts, uncles,
and siblings are eager to know if their
new kin resembles them But don’t be
fooled. It will be many months before
your baby's distinguishing characteris-
tics are apparent. All babies are born
with slate blue or brown eyes, depend-
ing upon race. Only later will their
true color emerge And be careful
about naming your new infant “Goldi-
locks” or “Ginger;" she will probably
lose her first hair and may sprout a
mane of a different color.
Although you may think your new-
born is a little unsightly at first, there is
no need to worry. Within a short time,
your baby is sure to be the most beauti-
ful baby in the world.
