The Lee County Historical Corn
mission took a number of actions
of importance to all Lee County
citizens at their meeting on July
5. Work on Vol. II of the Lee
County History is now underway
in earnest, with the commission
office now open from 9-4 on
Wednesdays, as well as 10-12 on
Mondays.
The new volume will update in-
formation from 1973 on all aspects
of county life, and will include new
sections on the towns and schools
and government, and new family
histories. The committee prepar
ing the book is seeking informa-
tion from everyone in the county.
If your family was not included in
the 1974 book, it can be included
in the next one.
Ruby Vance will be gathering in-
formation from the northern pre-
cincts, James Walker and new
member J.B. Gersch will work
with Giddings area families, and
Laverne Gersch will be searching
out family histories from the
Serbin/Northrup/Warda area
What is needed is update informa
tion on families mentioned in Vol
I plus new entries for families ei
ther not described in that book or
who have moved into the county
by 1990. Of special interest will be
letters and diaries of early settlers
as well as photos of family or corn
munity gatherings.
Mrs. Simpson has undertaken to
update black history. Carolyn
Marble will be reporting on busi-
nesses, industries, and commerce
of the past 20 years. Miriam York
will be looking for incidents of a
humorous or ironic nature. The
intention is to produce a detailed
study of Lee County today, for the
benefit of all future Lee Countians
and historians.
The commission discussed two
projects with proponents and
agreed to lend their endorsement
to both. One is a possible grant
from the State Highway Depart
ment, funded 80% by federal

any time in my life."
Is this an isolated example of
what happens to someone who
wins a multi-million dollar jack-
pot:? Apparently not.
Quite a number of other bigjack
pot winners have had similar re-
sponses. It's difficult to deal psy-
chologically as well as spiritually
with that kind of unexpected for-
tunes.
It reminds me of an old but wise
saying: "Be careful what you wish
for, because you might get it.
I've seen the same thing happen
to people who suddenly began re-
ceiving large sums of money from
oil royalty or from an inheritance.
All these things can change
someone's life drastically - and
not always necessarily for the bet-
ter.
God's Word warns believers
about desiring to be wealthy and
how riches can affect their life:
"But people who want to get rich
fall into temptation and a snare
and many foolish and harmful de-
sires, which drown them in de-
struction and ruin. For the love of
money is the root of all evils; and
some people, eager to get rich,
have wandered away from the
faith and pierced themselves with
many pains" (I Timothy 6:9-10).
All of us need to take this warn-
ing to heart. It wasn’t written to
make us turn away from riches
and keep us poor. But it was writ-
ten to warn us of the temptations
that go with wealth — and how it
could affect our eternal salvation.

town area for three years. Joyce
Bise, from the Chamber of Com-

project, and has found a high level
of support from city businesses
and organizations.
In other actions, the commission
voted to pay $2,000 on the 1993
loan from the county to reprint
Vol I. Over 175 of these have now
been sold. The group also ap-
proved a 1994/95 budget request,
and voted to buy the materials
and refinish the Fletcher House
furniture, with money received
from the motel-hotel tax, for dona-
tion to the heritage society when
they decide on the pattern of uses
for the restored home.
The commission voted to recom-

County Judge as an additional
member of the commission. Vol-

Does being rich guarantee hap-
piness?
A Greenville, Texas woman
doesn't think it does. Jean Oliver
won nearly $10 million in the
Texas lottery a little over a year
ago and has found that even sil-
ver clouds can have a dark lining.
First of all, she said she was so
shocked to find out she had won
that much money that she spent a
day taking medication for nerves.
And her husband Gary was in a
daze for a while.
Ms. Oliver also has found out
that all that notoriety can be tax-
ing on the nerves. She said she
wishes now she could have kept it
a secret so she wouldn't be recog-
nized everywhere she goes.
She says all the notoriety
embarrases her because she
doesn't think of herself as a mil-
lionaire, even though that's just
exactly what she is.
Hitting the lottery jackpot al-
lowed her to go from rags to riches
in one lifetime. She was one of
seven children who worked in her
father’s fields in Oklahoma, and
-he says she has been working
ever since.
Now she has to contend with
paving lots of income tax on all
that money and figuring out how
to invest or spend the rest.
One of her biggest regrets, it
seems, is that she and her hus-
band have lost some friends.
She says she doesn't know if she
makes them nervous, but she feels
like she doesn't fit in anywhere
anymore.
If she could make another wish -
her first one was probably to be
able to win the lottery jackpot —
she said she wishes she could be
where she was before she won the
lottery. She wishes people would
treat her the same as they used to.
During the past year, Ms. Oliver
says she has gone to the doctor
more than in her entire life. And
she has sought counseling to help
her deal with the down sides of
be ing a celebrity and being a mil-
lionaire.
To sum it all up, Ms. Oliver said,
"I used to say, if I had money,
nothing would bother me.' But
money’s not the answer to your
problems. It helps . . . but I've felt
lonelier in this last year than at
Wednesday.
