Fire devastates 5
businesses In tourist
town of Buda Sunday
A fire in the downtown section of
Buda, near Austin, destroyed five
businesses in the heart of this
tourist town.
Among the businesses devas-
tated by the blaze was the Prairie
Schooner Trading Post.
Evan Voyles, owner of the store,
lost his collection of some 500
pairs of real cowboy boots made
from the 1930s through the 1960s.
Four other businesses were also
set ablaze, including BW Bou-
tique, a nonprofit crafts store run
by the Buda Women's Club; two
industrial glass-blowing shops;
Poor Richard & Co., an antique
store; and a storage facility for the
Hays school district.
The fire was expected to slow up
the antique and tourist trade that
the town had become famous for.
painted but began flaking off.
leading to having to redo the paint
job at the worst possible time in
the middle of the summer.

The board met for three meet-
ings last week to interview and
hire a new superintendent. They
interviewed four candidates dur-
ing the week and voted to extend
a contract to a candidate at their
Thursday night meeting.
The board came out of executive
session and first voted on a motion
to hire Robert French as superin-
tendent. That motion failed by a
vote of 3-4, with Harvey Fischer,
Ted Weems and Karen Siegmund
voting for the motion. The board
next voted to extend a contract to
Mr. Field and that vote passed by
a vote of 4-3.
About 20 people were in atten-
dance at the school board meeting
to offer their support for Mr.
French, who was the former
Giddings Elementary principal.

Alcoa Texas Area Manager Mike

families in the area protected by
the Fedor volunteer fire fighters,"
Goza explained. "Also, we appre-

People have a great fascination
for books as is very evident by the
number of readers that use the
Rufus Young King Library. It is
also very evident when one visits
a book store and sees so many
people browsing through the large
selection of books. Publishing
companies and authors are kept
busy producing new books for the
reading public.
Elizabeth Adler has written an
exciting new large print book en-
titled Peach, which concerns an
orphan and an heiress who fight
their way to the top of the finan-
cial world. Janette Oke fans can
now read her latest, Too Long a
Stranger.
Readers of suspense will prob-
ably want to read the new edition
of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier,
especially since there will soon be
a sequel available. The Grey Be-
next to City Barber Shop and
Funn Travel on East Austin St.
in Giddings, was recently
moved to another location fur-
ther east on Hwy. 290 to be sold.
