Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Danny W. Fchtle, son of Julius I*, and Margaret
J. Echtie of Route 9, San Antonio, recently returned from deployment to the
Persian Gulf while serving aboard the miscellaneous command ship USS Coro-
nado, homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
During the 10-month deployment, Echtle was involved in the joint task force
middieeast operation, "Praying Mantis .conducted in response to the mining of
the guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts.
A 1981 graduate of Medina Valley High School, ( astroville, he joined the
Navy in April 1985.

March 19 at Naegelin Hall, St Louis
Catholic Church, Castroville, has
been rescheduled for Easter Sunday,
March 26.
This is the only group sponsoring a
blood drive on Easter Sunday. Your
donations are very important. Please
mark your calendars for this impor-
tant community event
The Medina Valley Sophomore
Class will be bolding an Italian Spa-
ghetti Luncheon on Sunday, April 2.
1989, at the High School Cafeteria
from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The luncheon will include spaghetti
with meat sauce, a salad, garlic bread,
and a drink. The spaghetti and meat
sauce will be made by members of the
Sophomore class.
('oast Guard L. (indr. Jerome A. Iltis, son of William A and Inez K. litis of
Castroville, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with Com-
mander, Coast Guard Group, Corpus Christi, Texas.
A 1973 graduate of Medina Valley High School, he joined the ( oast Guard in
May 1977.

St Louis Child Development Cen-
ter is accepting applications for the
1989-90 school term through March
15.
The center offers "a caring approach
to Christian Education" for half day
pre-kinder, foil day kindergarten and
for 1st grade students.
Day care services are also available
before and after school.

Dean C. Edlund, Castroville. was
notified on Feb. 22 that he had satis-
fied all requirements to become a
Texas Certified Nursery Professional.
In addition to experience and current
employment in horticulture, an appli-
cant must pass all four elements of an
examination administered statewide
by the Texas Ass’n. of Nurserymen.
The examination covers plant identifi-
cation, plant culture, disease and peat
identification and control, and land-
scape design
Edlund’s interest in plants dates
back to early boy hood, when he helped
his grandmother with her flower beds.
He started taking horticulture classes
in junior high, and received an Award
of Merit in horticulture at Medina
Valley High School.
Edlund has been employed at Med-
ina Valley Greenhouses since shortly

Homemakers held their County Cul-
tural Arts Exhibit on Feb. 27, at the
Natalia Baptist Church in Natalia.
Winners of the county competition will
compete in the district competition.
There were seven categories. Winners
were:
