With the search barely two weeks old, the City of LaCoste
already has 12 applications from hopefuls who want to wear
the chief of police badge
Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m on April 27. and
the weeding out begins shortly thereafter
“All of the candidates will be rated and ranked," City
Manager Ken Roberts said “The highest qualified will then
be presented to the mayor and council. Those recommended
by the council will be asked to fill out an application for
employment and a release for a background check The win-
ner, for lack of a better term, will be appointed by the mayor.
The council will either give (heir blessing or ask that he
reconsider."
Mayor Andy Keller stressed that while he does have the
ultimate power when it comes down to the appointment, he
won't be deciding alone.
“I have the power to appoint and fire," he said. "But we’re
going to make this decision as a group. I think the person we
hire will have to have strong management skills, especially
because we have a totally volunteer force. We would like for
the new chief’s salary to have a zero impact on the budget,
(former police chief) Ernest Christilles left us earning
520,000. However, we may need to spend a bit more to get the
quality we want."
Qualifications for the post are an intermediate certification
in law enforcement with five years of municipal and two years
of supervisory experience.
