Ar G. N. and Southern Pacific depots

DISTRIBUTION OF
FUNDS IS PUBLISHED
Board of Education Shows
How $500000 for Rural
Schools Disbursed.
AI’STIX. Tex. Aug. 12. —The State
Department of Education has just
issued a bulletin containing a gen-
eral report on the distribution of the
first $300000 of the million dollar
appropriation for country schools
available for the year 1915-16.
Among other things it shows that
1225 schools in 173 counties of the
state received aid from this fund in
amounts ranging from $lOO to $5OO.
The bulletin also contains interest-
ing information relative to the mini-
mum requirements a school must
meet in order to receive aid under
the million dollar appropriation.
The letters from emmtv superin-
tendents relative to the effect and
influence <>f the appropriation upon
the rural schools in the counties
where aid has been distributed are
especially interesting in this connec-
tion.
The purpose of the bulletin on this
subject is to show the benefits that
have accrued to the rural schools
ami the improvement made by them
as a direct result of this appropria-
tion and to give helpful information
to trustee^ and others interested in
the results attained by the State De-
partment of Education in the distri-
bution of the first $500000 of this
fund under the direction of the State
Board of Education.
For the scholastic year 1916-17
there will be another $500000 of this
appropriation available for distribu-
tion under the same conditions as
that of the previous year. Superin-
tendent Doughty expects even great-
er results from the distribution of
this $500000 than was accomplished
last year for the reason that the
Department of Education on ac-
count of its experience in handling
the first part of this appropriation
is in position to render greater serv-
ice during the coming year.
CONCERT AT THE GUNTER
Band of “Dandy FirM” Compliments
Manager IVrcy Tyrrell.
With a repertoire that ranged
from classic to quickstep and with
every member a capable soloist the
“Gentleman Band” of the “Dandy
First” Illinois infantry compliment-
ed Percy Tyrrell with a concert in
the lobby of the Gunter Hotel Friday
night.
After several selections had been
played and the crowd was beginning
to question one another as to where
such a splendid band came from
Captain MrKann. of the First Illi-
nois introduced the band leader
James Sidney Camp and told of the
organization and past history of the
band.
“A number of years ago our regi-
ment set out to find a band that
would reflect credit on the ‘Dandy
First.’ ” said Captain McKann. “We
found It in the person of James Sid-
ney Camp's band. They were enlisted
THE SAN ANTONIO LIGHT
into the militia with the understand-
ing that in case of war they were
to be excused —however when the
president called out the militia these
men were among the first to respond
to the colors sacrificing large sal-
aries all for their country’s sake.”
At the close of the program the
members of the band were given a
lunch and all went to a moving pic-
ture show as guests of Manager Tyr-
rell of the Gunter Hotel.

HISTORY OF TEXAS NO. 14:
In 1703 the Alamo was founded on the Rio Grande as the mission of
San Jose. It was then moved into the interior and named San Ildefonso;
then back to the Rio Grande and named San Francisco Solane. Seventeen
or eighteen years later it was moved by Father Margil to San Antonio de
Bexar and located at San Pedro Springs under the name of San Antonio
de Valero. In 1732 it was removed to Military Plaza and in 1744 it was
moved to its present locality and named the Alamo. . . .
(It la fitting that every Teian should know the many Important events of Texas history even as they should know Texas' best beer—Alamo)
