In the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 12, thunderstorms
swept across the Texas plains. Lightning struck the Guadalupe Peak
central office of Dell Telephone Cooperative (Dell City, TX), ig-
niting the line connected to 1, 000 gallons of propane. Dale Flach,
Dell Telephone’s manager, says the propane acted like "a flame-
thrower, melting the cables like butter” before the line was shut off.
An hour passed before anyone could enter the switch room. Says
Flach: "The fire destroyed all the carrier equipment, the DMS-10
switch, all the teletypes and peripherals, the chargers, and some
lightwave equipment, which we had just installed. ”
