MY BEDROOM IMPROVEMENT
so I went to town in a few days and
bought the canvas and paper to be-
gin that job. That was to be a new
experience to me, but I did the
work alone except for the assistance
of my seven year old daughter whi
held the end of the paper for me
while I put it up. My ceilings paver-

help me quite a bit here for sht
could drive tacks fairly well, and
I left the lower part of the canva"
for her to do. After paverirg the
walls I papered the closets wfh cel:

airy looking.
It was June now and I just had to

this time I was caring for 300 chicks

I took scalding soap suds and wash-
ed and mopped the floor. This took
a lot of mv green paint off, but just
wouldn't get it all. I .cot the steel
brush and used it, scrubbed and
preparing until I wished the fellow
who put it on was here to help m°
take it off. Finally I had to give up
hopes of getting it all off. Then
I took a crack filler and filled in the
places in the floor that need it. Next
came the sandpapering job. and
here t had some more experience: T
had hoped to stain mv floor with

Miss Slone was gone and my floor

the last judging to be done, and I
realized that I had to do something
So I began to read in my booklet
•■Bedrooms of Comfort " and found
that sometimes it is best to paint
old floors and that was my solution.
With the help of my husband we
finished putting shelves in the
clothes closet, put up a hanging rod.
rescreened windows. cleaned win-
dows. and put new putty around
the window glass, finished the clos-
et doors, refinished an old liabrary
table that was made from an old
wooden bed several years ago, re-
finished the woodwork, built a bed-
side table, table, and refinished the
bed.
Last fall I had all hopes of making
a lovely new cotton mattress for my
room, but apparently luck was again-
st me, for we were not fortunate
to make enough cotton to have 50 ■

Realizing the need of another bed-
room and that I needed a clothes
closet for my room I decided, with
the aid of my home demonstration
agent, that my “junk room" could
be made into a very comfortable
bedroom. With the help of my
husband and my little daughter I
feel like my dreams have almost
come true.
I have lived in this house for nine
years, and never had a bed in the
the room that I planned to improve.
The room was merely a catch-all.
no curtains, no shades. There was an
old safe in one corner of the room
when we moved into the house. I
used it to put our every-day cloth
in and for storage spcae for rag:
In another corner we stateked apple
boxes which held my canned vege-
tables, sausage, tomatoes. and empty
tin cans. A card board box also help-
ed to house the canned products. and
a cloth covered box held my quilts
because of lack of a better place for
them. Nails were driven almost all

work until he had to go to work in
the crop again, but in the meantime
I was busy cleaning up and finding
places for some of my provisions and
at odd times the closet was finished
The old quilt box was used for
shelves which happened to fit in
very nicely without any change.
Now I have two clothes closets in
my house 3x6 feet, equipped with
shelves for hats and folded garments
and linens, and ample storage space
above to care for my quilts properly.
By the time this work was com-
pleted the room had been cleared of
most of mv junk. My ceiling was

I had heard Miss Slone talk so
much about light weight that I de-
cided to make a wool comfort which
I hope to put on exhibit at our coun-
ty contest for comforts in the fall.
I have done my best in my im-
provement and feel that I have done
creditable work despite some mis-
takes. But we learn to do by doing
and no one can realize the value of
this work if we just sit and listen
and never do anything. A time has
come when every woman can refin ish
her furniture and have better homes
and I hope to do more and better
work. Mv improvement costs were
around $20.00 and all of it was paid
for with eggs and friers.
