A 38-year-old-Center man. Johnny
Berke Mitchell, was shot and killed
Thursday morning inCenter.
Center Police Chief Jimmy
Matthews said his office received a
call at 8 47 a.m. Thursday that there
had been a shooting at the home of
Sherrie Evans on Holland Street
When I and my officers arrived
at the scene Sherrie Evans told us
that she had shot at Johnny Berke
Mitchell and that she thought she
had hit him,” Chief Matthews said
"The officers went from her house

A report on the progress of new
classrom construction at Center
High School and preparations for
construction of a new elementary
school was presented by architects
to the Center School Board at its
regular May meeting on Monday
night.
Architects Duane Scott and Wayne
Yeargain of The Scott Partnership
firm of Longview said that the eight
new classrooms being added to the
Business and Science Building at the
high school are on schedule for use
this coming fall.
They also said that complete plans
for the new elementary school to be
located near Roughrider Stadium
are expected to be ready by mid-
June and that bids on site
preparation work will be sought in
the next few weeks.
The Board also heard a report
from CISD counseling director
Charlene Kraemer on results of this
year s California Achievement and
TEAMS tests which are used to
measure the progress of students as
they move through the grades.
Superintendent Hank Halvorson
said that the test scores for all the
grades tested "indicate that our
school system is doing a good job."
and that the results from the kin-
dergarten. first grade and ninth
grade "are extremely good, very
impressive.”
A letter was read and discussed
from the school district's insurance
advisor. Buster Bounds, recom-
mending that a review be made of
the system’s liability insurance

team sponsors that letter jackets be
presented to outstanding student
competitors in literary competition.

In personnel matters the Board
accepted the resignation of high
school teacher Lela Hogan and
granted a one-year leave of absence
to junior high teacher Rosalie
Gooch.
The Board also hired two new high
school teacher-coaches. They are
Bill Ward and William Dotson
managment level.
Sullivan has taught in classrooms
in Corpus Christi. Robstown, Irving.
Dallas and Conroe He became
grade level principal in 1981 and was
named to his current positon in 1984
