FAMOUS FLIERS ARE
TRAININGAMERICANS
Is a German air raid on Washing-
ton possible?
It is.
Nupersubinarines capable of car-
rying several airplanes have been
repeatedly reported built by Ger-
many for Just this purpose says the
Washington Times. A fleet of tße»t
great U-boats could release their
xvinged messengers of death just off
the Atlantic coast some day or ntght
and within an hour a whole squadron
of hostile airplanes might be soaring
over Washington.
But any Hoche fliers who might
take part in such a trip would find
to their surprise that they had
rushed into a veritable hornet s nest
of defending airplanes.
And every one of these airplanes
xvould be manned by an aviator who
has written his name large on the
scrool of fame as a war flier of many
victories oxer the battle fields of
France b'very one of the defending
fleet which could rise from Potomac
Park xvould be piloted by a birdman
who has taken a large toll of foe
aviators- who has downed enough
pianos to win the coveted little "ace.”
For in Washington today there
are assembled the best fliers In the
world. They are here xxith the al-
lied aviation missions teaching
young American air cadets how to
fly and vanquish the boche. aiding
America in the upbuilding of It* gi-
gantic air program and incidentally
giving exhibitions daily that have
thrilled Washingtonians time and
again.
In Potomac Park there is a great
gray steel hangar erected some time
ago to house the airplanes that were
to give exhibitions there. Today
there are in that hangar almost a
dozen planes—French. British. Ital-
ian and American. Within a few
days there will be added several
other planes which have just arrived
in this country including a fighting
monoplane xvhich has seen service
over the French front and whieb
xxill be piloted here by Lieut. Con-
stant Soulier France's 19-year-old
ace.
A partial list of the war famous
aviators today in Washington in-
dudes the following names—all of
which will be recognized as having
been cited repeatedly for exploits of
xalor over there.
Lieut. Col. Charles F. Lee and
Lieut. John A. Sully of the British
Royal Flying corps; ('apt. Sinvio
Resnati. pilot of the giant Capron!
bombing plane the Italian aviator
par excellence; Scrgt. Gianfellce
Gino Italian flier who recently es-
tablished a new recefd on a flight to
this city from Hampton Roads. Va.;
Maj. George Tulasne. chief of the
French aviation mission; Capt. Al-
fred Heurtaux France's "ace of
aces.” since the death of the brave
('aptain Guynemer; Lieut. Constant
Soulier the 19-year-old ace xvho has
officially downed fifteen Teuton air-
men; Lieut. Georges Flasvhaire the
debonnair young Frenchman whose
daredevil exhibitions racked the
nerves of Washingtonians recently;
Lieut. Max Benois. French air hero
who will soon fly over this city;
Lieut. Henri Farre who. although he
has not and will not fly here has
distinguished himself on bombing
expeditions over there and who has
painted more than one hundred mar-
velous pictures of war in the air.
xvhich are on exhibition in Washing-
ton noxv.
Tho array of war fliers is supple-
mented by the presence of several
civilian aviators of note. Including
the famous avlatrix. Ruth Law
whose flights in an old model unin-
cjosed plane proved a great attrac-
tion on Liberty Loan Day.
Then too there are in this city
scores of young American fliers who.
• Ithouch their mettle has not yet
been tested over the fighting lines in
Europe are as accomplished fliers ns

RODE AN ENGINE BACK
HOME.
Mrs. Luther Kountze Omaha soci-
ety leader wife of the vice president
of the First National Bank had a
thrilling ride in a switch engine with
an engineer as ‘‘chauffeur" the other
day. says the Omaha News.
Mrs. Kountze did not take the ride
in the cab nf the engine for the ex-
citement. but tn rescue four nf her
canteen workers who wore on the
special train with drafted men. who
were speeding on their way to Camp
Funston.
The four workers were distribut-
ing "goodies'’ to the newly made
Sammies when the train pulled out
"I had the station agent telephone
the first switching point.” said Mrs.
Kountze "to stop the train and then
had him get me an engine so I could
pick up the girls when they got off
of the train.
“I feared that they would be left
in the yards with a long walk to a
