Are Movies Making Girls Lovelier the World Over?
Psychologists Declare That
Mental Impressions Un-
consciously Make Faces
More Beautiful and Film
Celebrities Agree in In-
dorsing the Cinemato-
graph as Beauty Doctor.
Are the movies making the girls more
lovely? Reports from London have it
that the rising generation of English
girls includes a larger proportion of
beauties than any preceding one. and
the theorists over there are saying that
the movies are responsible for the in-
creasing wealth of beauty among fem-
ininity.
Looking almost daily on the faces of
fair women as they are reproduced on
the films a continual contemplation of
their smiles prettily arranged coiffures
modishly draped gowns—but particular-
ly the faces—is held to have an effect
upon the mind of the movie fan that in
turn tends to make her the more beauti-
ful.
Psychologists in London declare that
the very atmosphere of the moving pic-
ture emporium is conducive to good
looks making. Sitting quietly in the
darkened theater mind and body re-
laxed. gating upward seeing that which
bespeaks beauty—all of this it is claim-
ed has a psychic influence upon the
yonng people when gazing upon select-
ed types of lovely faces it is argued
tend to hare a cumulative effect result-
ing in the genera! beautification of the
face.
Is it true? Such a contention ought
first of all to offset those arguments
that the movies make girls contented
lead them into extravagance propagate
false ideals concerning life and give
girls the urge to have all the beautiful
things of lif" regardless of how they
get them. To be beautiful has ever
been the objective of womanhood since
the days of Eve; to have at hand a
means of obtaining beauty simply
through the impressionistic medium of
movie film that may be seen for about
a quarter is a proposition that interests
every daughter of Eve.
London is right at least so far as
its contention that its women are be-
coming more beautiful is concerned. The
American doughboy has a fairly strong
impression along these lines. Many of
them brought fair young English brides
home with them. Others brought
French lassies. Each is insistent that
his bride is the most beautiful woman
in all the world. All the world loves
a lover and there is no quarrel with
the statement of each and every dough-
boy that his bride is the sweetest and
prettiest in the world.
But the vast majority of returned
doughboys are champions of the Amer-
ican girl as the most beautiful type
in all the world notwithstanding the
chic little French maiden the dreamy
Russian the cultured English girl the
dark-haired Spanish beauty or any of
the many types that have met him in
every port whither he has sailed or sol-
diered during the last two years. "Of
course the girls are geting prettier all
the time” says the lovelorn sailor or
soldier laddie as he hurries ashore to
plight his troth with her who waits in
the gloaming.
On the score that womanhood the
world over is improving in good looks
there is no quarrel. It was ever thus
from the days of Helen of Troy of
Cleopatra of all the beautiful goddesses
who have urged men to deeds of dar-
ing and coddled them in turn for their
bravery.
But has the cinematograph anything
to do with it?
"Very much depends on the interpre-
tation of the world beauty" says Ger-
aldine Farrar the beautiful and ac-
complished songbird who has lately been
enjoying signal success in the screen
studio.
“Many today agree wi.h Plato that
an object is beautiful in proportion as
it is useful. Surely that which stimu-
lates woman to make herself more at-
tractive is useful in that society is
lifted to a higher plane of thought
through visualization of the beautiful.
"What is the first question you hear
back there in the subdued light of the
theater as a film is being unwound and
a new star is making her screen debut?
What does the woman say to her hus-
band? Is she pretty? Do you thinks
she's pretty?
"So far as the women are concerned
I very much agree with the London
contention that the movies are one of
the agencies instrumental in making a
lovelier race of women. The psychology
of it la very easy. Association with
pleasing types of femininity enkindles a
desire also to be pretty. We are nat-
urally imitators. When we dramatize
our own conceptions of the pleasing we
arrive somewhere near the copied part.
Constant reiteration of this process
must in the long run effect a perma-
nent change in keeping with the ideal
that we pursue."
Clara Horton the Goldwyn star is
another who agrees with the London
psychologists. To the motion picture
screen she says can be attributed in
large part the fact that within recent
years the American girl has become
a more beautiful creature.
