Dinner of Rishona Club One,
Pioneer Women, will be held at
Kaphan’s Restaurant on Sunday,
Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Israel. The girls in most cases are
from newly immigrated families.
Under the supervision of
Moetzet Hapoalet and Pioneer
Women, forty one centers are
completed or near completion
with more being built each year.
The Centers serve the needs of
the total population thru adult
and youth activities, as well as
providing child care services and
vocational course programs.
Four Agro-Mechanical high
schools in Petach-Tikva, Ayonot,
Hadera Eron and Kanot with
1200 students enrolled annually
and comprehensive high schools
in Beersheba and Tel Aviv, as
well as baby-nurse training
courses at Omna and Haifa, are
maintained by Pioneer Women
and Moetzet Hapoalot.
Thirty five Arab Women’s
Clubs are mainuined to operate
programs which include
instructions in vocational and
domestic skills, and in Hebrew
language acculturation and
modern social concepts.

programs for teenage Arab,
Druze and Bedouin girls and S
day nurseries and kindergartens

Emanu El Brotherhood Kaffee
Klatsch Session Nov. 3
Carol Gilbert will speak to
the Temple Emanu El
Brotherhood on Sunday, Nov. 3,
as part of its Kaffee Klatch
series. Her topic is: “Is it
possible to rear children today?”
and will deal with new problems
faced by adults today which did
not confront their parents.
A native of California, Mrs.
Gilbert received her BA in
psychology at Mills College and
her MA from the University of
Chicago School of Social Service
Administration. She is a social
worker for the Jewish Family
Service, and as part of her work
there, serves as a consultant to
the Jewish Community Center
Nursery School and summer day
camp program.
The Kaffee Klatsch Sunday
morning session will resume
again in January.

Another recipient is Shirley
Stein. Her life has centered
around the arts and the opera
She was a founding member of
Theatre Under the Stars and the
TUTS Guild. She served as
TUTS president for two years,
and watched the growth of an
organization that provided a
vehicle for local talent to stay
here in Houston instead of going
on to a larger city. With her
husband Bruce, Mrs. Stein
always set aside the preview of a
production for the “shut-ins” —
the elderly, the handicapped, the
blind and the disadvantaged
Mrs. Stein serves on many
boards: Houston Grand Opera,
Houston Chamber Orchestra, the
Mental Health Assn of Houston
and Harris Co., and the Houston
Grand Opera Guild as
corresponding secretary By
involving herself, she has helped
to provide the people of the
Houston community of the arts
and music they might not
otherwise have had.
“Put back into your
community what you have
received,” was said to Dolores
Wilkenfeld as a child by her
father, and her goals are set that
way. Whether as wife and
mother, volunteer or writer,
Dolores gives of herself to many

The Houston Chapter,
Brandeis University National
Women’s Committee, will hold
its 2nd annual “Beautiful
Activists” awards luncheon and
style show on Nov. 6 at 11 a.m.
in the Warwick Hotel’s
LaFontaine Room. Mayor Fred
Hofheinz and Stewart Orton,
president of Foley’s, will salute
the ten women who represent
the finest in community action
and involvement, said Arlene
Nathan, general chairman of the
luncheon. The awards will be
presented by Ann Walsh
executive vice president of
Germaine Monteil.
Among the recipients are
Florence Blum, long an advocate
of making the world a better
place in which to live, calls
herself an occupational
housewife. A leader in the
Interfaith Workshop of Houston,
she joins hands with many faiths
and. truly represents her own
Judaic background. Her
activities as a volunteer have
been in many areas of Temple
Emanu El Sisterhood, the Jewish
Community Center, Jewish
Home for the Aged, B’nai B’rith
Women, ORT, and Brandeis U.
National Women’s Committee.
In the community Mrs. Blum
has been active in the St. Joseph
Hospital, Y.W.C.A., Citizens for
Good Schools, and the
international organization with
700,000 members in the United
States, Israel, Canada, Mexico,
Belgium, France, Australia,
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru
and Uraguay. In Israel, Pioneer
Women in cooperation with
Moetzet Hapoalot provides 68%
of all social services for women,
youth and children.
Some 1500 Pioneer Women
Installations are devoted to
rehabilitation, education and
integration of citizens from
more than 100 lands and
cultures into a modern state.
Approximately 500 nurseries,
kindergartens, and day centers
including those in absorption
centers, and five day-night
homes are maintained. The
numbers fluctuate according to
need. Group work with
adolescent girls is carried out in

FOLK FESTIVAL ’74 will be

sabra who has been
enthusiastically received in all
American cities where the group
has appeared. He is the son of a
cantor, a versatile young man
who sings, acts, and- generally
keeps the interest level of the
audience moving from act to act.
Congregation Brith Shalom is
sponsoring the Israeli Folk
Festival ’74, on Tuesday
evening, Nov. 19 at 8:00 p m. in
the Music Hall. Yaffa Yarkoni
will head a cast of twenty-six
performers, which includes the
Adler Trio and The Sabra Dance
Group. Over 40 performances
have been scheduled in major
American cities, including a
sell-out for Madison Square
Garden in New York City.
